Ange Postecoglou Begins Tenure as Nottingham Forest Manager
Ange Postecoglou has stated that he doesn't "have to prove anything to anyone" as he embarks on his new role as the manager of Nottingham Forest.
Postecoglou was appointed on Tuesday, following the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo, who was let go after 21 months at the helm.
The Australian manager returns to the sidelines three months after being relieved of his duties at Tottenham, where he oversaw a challenging Premier League season, culminating in a 17th-place finish.
Despite the struggles, Postecoglou led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years, clinching the Europa League title in May.
The 60-year-old received initial acclaim for the attacking style he introduced at Tottenham but faced criticism for adhering to his high-intensity philosophy during a season that saw the team lose 22 of their 38 league matches.
When asked if he aimed to silence his critics, Postecoglou responded, "I don’t see it as a point to prove. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. I do like my teams to play exciting football and score goals to engage the fans. I make no apologies for that; that’s just who I am."
He humorously noted that he would soon discover "who the true Ange believers" are as he transitions from Spurs to Forest.
Postecoglou's first match in charge will be on Saturday, when Forest faces Arsenal.
'I might have to win a trophy in my first season'
Despite Tottenham's dismal performance last season, their victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final marked the club's first major trophy since 2008.
This achievement reinforced Postecoglou's assertion that he typically secures a trophy in his second season at a club.
He has previously won league titles in his second season with South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, and Yokohama F. Marinos, as well as during both of his seasons at Celtic.
When asked about his second-season success during his inaugural press conference as Forest manager, Postecoglou reminded reporters that he has also captured titles in his first season at other clubs. "I won the double with Celtic in my first year. I may have to [win a trophy this season] to have a second year here," he remarked. "I’ve already stated my desire to win trophies, and that’s what I’ve done throughout my career, and that’s what I aim to achieve here."
Postecoglou reflected on his unexpected departure from Tottenham after winning a trophy, suggesting, "I must have done something right. There is no Spurs supporter I come across now who doesn’t want to hug me and take me home for dinner."
He added, "I love creating lasting legacies. At every club I’ve been to, I’d like to think I’d be welcomed back because I left a mark."
