Antoine Semenyo Shines in Manchester City Debut with Record Win
Antoine Semenyo's transition from Bournemouth to Manchester City began in spectacular fashion, as he played a pivotal role in a record-equalling victory just four days after his transfer.
The forward, who moved to City from Bournemouth for £65 million, made his debut against Exeter City in the FA Cup third round, where he helped secure a stunning 10-1 victory over the League One side.
During his time at Bournemouth, Semenyo became a fan favorite, and his goal and assist on his first start for City are sure to endear him to supporters at his new club.
The Ghanaian forward was named man of the match in a game that marked the first time City scored double figures under manager Pep Guardiola and matched the largest victory in the club's history, previously set during a 10-1 win against Huddersfield in 1987.
This match also represented the biggest FA Cup victory for a top-flight team since Tottenham Hotspur defeated Crewe 13-2 in a fourth-round replay in 1960.
With Guardiola absent due to a one-game touchline ban, assistant coach Pep Lijnders took charge and praised the team's performance, highlighting Semenyo's quick adaptation to their style of play.
"Antoine is settling in well. He is a humble guy, and we have followed him for a long time. He brings something special to our frontline—his ability to attack quickly and his relentless work ethic are exactly what we need," Lijnders said.
Semenyo's beaming smile at full-time reflected his contribution to the team's impressive win. Although star striker Erling Haaland only played the first half, he will surely benefit from Semenyo's service in future matches.
Semenyo's first goal for City came from a precise pass by Rayan Cherki, allowing him to calmly finish under Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth. This achievement made him the first player to score and assist in his City debut since Sergio Aguero did so against Swansea in August 2011.
As City continues its unbeaten streak across all competitions, they remain six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and are preparing for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle on Tuesday.
Lijnders noted the importance of maintaining momentum, stating, "We have a special group of players who are experienced and lead the team well. We are on the right path and look forward to building on our successes in the League Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League."
The score reached 9-0 late in the match when debutant Ryan McAidoo scored, leading the home fans to chant for a tenth goal. Although Exeter's George Birch managed to score a stunning goal, City finished the match with a historic 10-1 scoreline, becoming the first top-flight team to score ten or more goals in any English competition since Liverpool defeated Fulham 10-0 in 1986.
Exeter manager Gary Caldwell, reflecting on the match, said, "The experience was unexpected for us. My players were excited for a moment, but once they faced Haaland, they realized they were up against one of the best. This was a humbling experience, but it won't define our season; we will focus on our upcoming league matches."
