Arsenal Advances in Carabao Cup Semi-Final with Victory Over Chelsea
Arsenal's semi-final performance under manager Mikel Arteta has been underwhelming in recent years.
However, after failing to secure a win in their previous four two-legged semi-finals, Arsenal's 3-2 victory against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup has brought them one step closer to their first major final since their FA Cup triumph in 2020.
The Gunners had previously lost their last four semi-finals, scoring only two goals throughout those matches. Now, they are strong favorites to overcome their semi-final struggles at the Emirates Stadium on February 3.
Arteta's team has been exceptional this season, currently leading both the Premier League and Champions League, and advancing to the FA Cup fourth round.
This match marked Arsenal's 32nd game of the season, with only two losses, both occurring away against Liverpool and Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Arteta and his squad believe that their winning margin could have been larger before the second leg, as they aim for an early opportunity to lift a trophy in the EFL Cup final on March 22.
"First of all, I want to commend the players for their performance against a very strong opponent," said Arteta. "After going 3-1 up and having a dominant spell, we felt we had two great chances to score a fourth goal, which would have changed the outcome significantly. However, they managed to score from a corner, making it 3-2, so it's still competitive. While we are not entirely satisfied, we must also appreciate what the team has accomplished once again."
Gyokeres Shines with Much-Needed Performance
Striker Viktor Gyokeres has had a challenging start to his Arsenal career following his £64 million summer transfer from Sporting. The Swedish forward had not found the net since scoring a penalty against Everton last month, making his goal against Chelsea his first from open play since November.
The 27-year-old appeared to regain his confidence during this match, showcasing the talent that earned him 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. He also assisted Martin Zubimendi's goal, which secured Arsenal's lead going into the second leg at the Emirates.
"That's what I need to do, and I can replicate it more often. We won today, and we'll keep pushing forward," Gyokeres stated. "While it's still a second leg ahead, it's encouraging to leave with a win and an advantage. We need to perform well in the next match. It was a tough game; we defended well against their counter-attacks, but it was unfortunate to concede two goals. Still, scoring three makes me happy."
Room for Improvement
Despite leading 2-0 at one point, it seemed the Gunners could score at will. However, Alejandro Garnacho pulled one back for Chelsea, making it 2-1. Zubimendi's excellent finish restored Arsenal's two-goal lead, but Garnacho scored again, narrowing the gap.
Entering the second leg with a two-goal advantage at the Emirates, where Arsenal remains unbeaten this season, would have been ideal. Nonetheless, Chelsea is still very much in contention for the tie.
"We didn't perform well in the second half and allowed them to apply more pressure, which led to our goals conceded. It's not up to our standards, and that's disappointing," said goalscorer Ben White. "But ultimately, we secured the win."
Despite the tie's status and Arteta's disappointment with the late-game performance, the Arsenal manager is now shifting focus to their Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday at 17:30 GMT. "In 20 minutes, I will start thinking about Forest and preparing for that, ensuring everyone recovers from this match. I'm very pleased with our performance tonight, but now we must concentrate on the next challenge," Arteta concluded.
