Arsenal's Promising Young Talent: Max Dowman Shines in Pre-Season
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has had a hectic summer, bolstering the squad with six new signings, including striker Viktor Gyokeres, to strengthen their Premier League title aspirations. However, it is one of the two 15-year-old academy players on their pre-season tour of Asia who has truly captured the spotlight.
Max Dowman and Marli Salmon are the youngest players in the squad. Dowman, an attacking midfielder, has impressed in friendlies against AC Milan and Newcastle, showcasing his immense potential.
Having first trained with the first team at 14, Dowman was part of the senior squad that traveled to Dubai for a winter training camp in January. During an injury crisis, there was even speculation about the England youth international receiving a call-up, as key forwards Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus were sidelined at various times.
Dowman replaced England international Saka in both pre-season friendlies. While he displayed moments of skill against AC Milan, his performance against Newcastle highlighted why he is tipped for a Premier League debut this season. A remarkable dribble into the area led to a penalty after being fouled by Joelinton, securing Arsenal's 3-2 victory.
"It is special," Arteta remarked about Dowman's display against Newcastle. "What he's done today against this team at his age is uncommon. We are thrilled to have him. The environment around him, including his family and the club, has been crucial in giving him this opportunity so early in his journey."
'Keep the right mindset and let them shine'
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who joined Real Madrid at 16 and was courted by Europe's elite clubs, expressed his willingness to share his experiences with Dowman and England Under-16 international defender Salmon. "The squad is excellent in supporting young players," said the 26-year-old Norwegian. "I try to guide them, help them maintain the right mindset, and let them shine."
Dowman represented England Under-17s in the Euros, becoming the youngest scorer of the tournament with a goal against the Czech Republic. At Arsenal, he plays three years above his age group, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 23 games last season. His performance was particularly impressive in the last seven matches of the under-18 Premier League South season, with 14 goals and three assists.
Arsenal's England midfielder Declan Rice has praised him as an "unreal talent," and Dowman hopes to follow in the footsteps of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, both 18, who have progressed to the first team from the club's academy.
