Arsenal's Remarkable Victory Over Bayern Munich
Mikel Arteta has hailed Bayern Munich as the "best team in Europe," but after a commanding victory that maintained Arsenal's perfect record in the Champions League, one must wonder if this is the moment the Gunners have declared themselves as serious title contenders.
Arsenal has enjoyed an impressive season, with 16 wins, two draws, and just one loss across all competitions.
For the first time since the 2005-06 season, Arsenal has won their first five matches in the Champions League, a feat that led them to their only final in the tournament's history.
Arteta's team remains the only club with a flawless record in this season's Champions League, having broken a five-match winless streak against the German champions, a run that dated back to 2015.
Former Arsenal and England defender Matt Upson commented on BBC Radio 5Live, stating, "The confidence is there for Arsenal. You can feel it simmering all the time. They might have patches in a game where they don't play that well, but the foundation is built, so it doesn't drop below a certain level. Previously, Arsenal would have brilliant flashes followed by matches where they faded. We’re not seeing that now. It’s a consistent 7/10 performance, occasionally reaching 9/10, but they are consistently delivering results."
Bayern Munich entered the match unbeaten this season and had lost just three of their previous 52 Champions League games prior to facing Arsenal (with 45 wins and 4 draws).
Arteta praised his players, stating, "First of all, I have to commend our players for their incredible performance against, in my opinion, the best team in Europe. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, who was named UEFA's Player of the Match, also recognized the importance of this victory as Arsenal aims to secure their first trophy since 2020. He remarked, "Look at Bayern Munich this season; they have been the best team in Europe. This was probably the toughest tactical challenge we have faced this season. In the second half, we went man-to-man with them, and I thought we were outstanding. The manager is thrilled. It was a special European night. Yes, it definitely feels different from last season. We have many leaders in the team, and we are taking it one game at a time. There is a hunger and desire to win every match, but we must remain grounded. There’s still a long way to go."
Arsenal's Depth Proves Crucial
Despite being without forwards Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus, Arteta had the luxury of bringing on Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli from the bench.
With injuries affecting several forwards, the return of captain Martin Odegaard and the progress of Gyokeres and Havertz suggest that Arteta's options are set to improve further.
After acquiring eight new players over the summer, Arteta has adeptly managed the challenges faced, with Madueke scoring his first goal for the club against Bayern, while Martinelli netted his fourth goal in as many Champions League matches.
