Ashvir Singh Johal Appointed as Morecambe Manager
Ashvir Singh Johal has made history by becoming the first Sikh to manage a professional football club in Britain, following his appointment as the manager of Morecambe.
At just 30 years old, he is also the youngest manager in the top five tiers of English football.
The National League club, known as the Shrimps, was acquired by the Panjab Warriors consortium on Sunday, bringing an end to a prolonged period of uncertainty for the team.
Singh Johal takes over the managerial position from Derek Adams, who was dismissed on Monday after a challenging run.
Prior to this role, Singh Johal served under Kolo Toure at Wigan Athletic and assisted Cesc Fabregas with the youth team at the Italian club Como. Earlier this summer, he also became one of the youngest coaches in English football history to earn his UEFA Pro Licence qualification.
Before transitioning to senior football with Wigan in 2022, he dedicated a decade to various positions within the Leicester City academy.
In a June interview with the BBC, Singh Johal expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, stating, "I have been fortunate to work with and learn from some incredible people, and I’m especially grateful to Kolo and Cesc. I know what world-class standards look like, how to lead with clarity, and how to develop a team with a real identity. We will create an environment that brings the best out of people, that people want to be part of, and that drives people to improve every day."
