Aston Villa Advances with Malen's Double Against Young Boys
Donyell Malen scored twice, leading Aston Villa to a decisive victory over Young Boys and bringing them closer to automatic qualification for the Europa League knockout stages.
The Dutch forward netted both goals in a first half that was overshadowed by crowd disturbances in the away section, where Malen was struck by a plastic cup while celebrating his 27th-minute opener.
Further unrest occurred just before half-time after Malen's second goal, resulting in a brief stoppage as some seats were torn up by Swiss fans and additional objects were thrown onto the pitch.
However, the situation calmed in the second half, allowing Villa to secure their seventh consecutive home victory, marking a turnaround after a challenging start to the season in which they went winless in the first six matches.
This resurgence has coincided with Malen's impressive form.
He opened the scoring with a powerful header from a fine cross by Youri Tielemans, and added his second just three minutes before the break, clinically finishing after receiving an excellent pass from Morgan Rogers.
Malen briefly celebrated what he thought was a hat-trick in the second half, tapping in Rogers' cross, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside call against the England midfielder.
Despite having multiple opportunities to extend their lead, Villa appeared to ease off, a decision that nearly backfired when Young Boys found the net with their first shot on target. However, Chris Bedia's late strike was ruled offside after a lengthy VAR review.
Young Boys eventually found the back of the net in the 90th minute when Gregory Wuthrich delivered a perfectly lofted ball behind Villa's defense, allowing Joel Monteiro to chest it down and volley past goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
Villa held on to their lead, moving up to second place in the league phase, while Young Boys remained in 24th with six points from five games.
Aston Villa Analysis: Malen's Impressive Month
After overcoming early-season challenges, Villa is currently excelling in both European and Premier League competitions, with a recent victory against Leeds placing them fourth in the league table.
The team has won 10 of their last 12 matches, and Malen's remarkable form has been a significant factor in this turnaround.
Since the start of November, the 26-year-old has scored five goals in six appearances for club and country, showcasing his ability to dominate defenses, as Young Boys discovered on Thursday night.
Malen and Rogers formed an effective partnership, with Rogers adeptly anticipating Malen's runs. Although Malen could have secured a hat-trick, manager Unai Emery wisely substituted him midway through the second half while Villa maintained control.
Malen's performance has also alleviated pressure on Ollie Watkins, who continues to struggle this season, having failed to add to his solitary goal when he came on in the final 30 minutes, despite having a decent shot saved.
Following the substitutions of Malen and Rogers, Villa's effectiveness in the final third diminished, making the closing moments of the match less comfortable than they should have been.
