Belfast to Host Euro 2028 Qualifying Draw
The Irish Football Association has announced that it is "fantastic news" that the qualifying draw for Euro 2028 will take place in Belfast.
The tournament is set to be hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland, although no matches will be held in Northern Ireland.
Initially, Casement Park was included as a potential venue for the tournament when the UK and Republic of Ireland submitted their bid to host Euro 2028. However, the west Belfast stadium was removed from consideration in September 2024 after the UK government indicated it would not provide funding for its redevelopment in time for the event.
Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood expressed pride in Belfast's role in the tournament, stating, "We are incredibly proud that our city will play such an important role in delivering what will be the best-ever EURO - one that celebrates passion, inclusivity, and the power of football to bring people together." He added, "It's a proud moment for the Irish FA and for everyone who loves football here in Northern Ireland."
The qualifying draw, scheduled for December 6, 2026, at the ICC Belfast, is currently the only official Euro 2028 event planned for Northern Ireland, with the tournament's opening match set to occur in Cardiff and games held across various venues in England, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
Irish FA CEO Patrick Nelson remarked, "It's a real privilege to host the qualifying draw for UEFA Euro 2028 - a key milestone in what promises to be a memorable, world-class tournament. We will welcome UEFA's leadership, national associations, and teams to Belfast, allowing them to experience everything our city and ICC Belfast have to offer. It’s fantastic news for Belfast, for Northern Ireland, and for football across these islands."
