Blackburn Secures Home Victory Against Millwall
Blackburn Rovers showcased an impressive performance at Ewood Park, securing their second home victory of the season and extending Millwall's winless streak to three matches.
Andri Gudjohnsen opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season, followed by Yuki Ohashi, who doubled the lead just before halftime.
Millwall's defense faltered significantly for both goals, marking their first back-to-back defeats in the Championship under manager Alex Neil, which hampers their promotion ambitions.
While the victory is a welcome relief for Blackburn fans, many believe it merely masks deeper issues within the club, with calls for the ownership of Venky's to sell and a boycott of the upcoming home match against Watford on January 24.
Despite only scoring nine goals in their previous ten home matches, Blackburn struck early in the third minute when goalkeeper Max Crocombe mishandled a shot from Matty Litherland, allowing Gudjohnsen to convert the rebound.
Litherland, making an impressive debut at right wing-back, forced Crocombe into a save following an error by Tristan Crama.
Millwall struggled to find their rhythm, with a brief moment of hope when Camiel Neghli shot over the bar and Mihailo Ivanovic's attempt from a tight angle was saved by Aynsley Pears.
However, Blackburn maintained control and added a second goal in the 45th minute due to a disastrous mix-up between defender Dan McNamara and Crocombe, allowing Ohashi to tap into an empty net.
In addition to Litherland's standout debut, Nathan Dlamini and Tom Atcheson made their Championship debuts for the injury-depleted Rovers, while Ohashi narrowly missed extending the lead with a header from Litherland's cross.
Millwall, also grappling with injuries, will leave frustrated, particularly after center-half Caleb Taylor failed to hit the target with a header from Alfie Doughty's corner.
The match could have ended 3-0, but Lewis Miller squandered a close-range header in the 90th minute from a free-kick taken by Blackburn's exceptional captain, Todd Cantwell.
