Blackpool Parts Ways with Steve Bruce Following Poor Start
Blackpool FC has parted ways with experienced manager Steve Bruce after a disappointing start to the League One season.
The 64-year-old, who boasts over 1,000 managerial games, took over from Neil Critchley at Bloomfield Road in September 2024. Last season, he led the team to a ninth-place finish, raising hopes for a promotion challenge this year.
However, Saturday's 2-0 home defeat against AFC Wimbledon marked the team's seventh loss in just 11 league matches, leaving them second from the bottom of the table.
Alongside Bruce, assistant head coach Steve Agnew and first-team coach Stephen Clemence have also departed the club. Coaches Stephen Dobbie and Steve Banks have been appointed as interim managers until a permanent replacement is found.
Following the defeat, Bruce acknowledged that his team was "nowhere near what’s required" and took responsibility for the performance. "I can try and make as many excuses as I want, but it’s not in my nature to do it," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.
Bruce's tenure at Blackpool followed a nearly two-year hiatus from management after being dismissed from West Bromwich Albion in October 2022. He began his managerial career with Sheffield United in 1998 and has since achieved four promotions to the Premier League, managing clubs such as Sunderland, Wigan, and Newcastle United.
Upon taking charge at Blackpool, Bruce expressed his passion for the game, stating, "There was a time when I thought I’d done my stint, but the enjoyment and love of football has brought me back to work. You get to a certain age and you think, ‘Am I on the scrap-heap?’ But I hope I’ve got a lot to offer and I’ve got an abundance of experience."
Bruce started his tenure at Bloomfield Road positively, securing four wins and a draw in his first five matches. However, he took a two-week leave of absence last October following the tragic death of his four-month-old grandson, Madison, and expressed gratitude to the football community for their support during that difficult time.
Despite a solid finish to last season, where Blackpool lost only five of their final 25 League One matches, a total of 10 draws hampered their chances of reaching the top six. The club made several summer signings, including experienced defenders Fraser Horsfall and Michael Ihiekwe, as well as former Sunderland captain George Honeyman.
This season began with a home defeat to Stevenage, followed by a heavy 4-1 loss at Exeter City. Although they secured a 3-2 victory over a highly regarded Huddersfield side, they subsequently fell short in three of their next four matches. A last-minute goal from Jordan Brown gave them a brief reprieve with a 1-0 win over Barnsley, but just one point from the next three games ultimately led to Bruce's dismissal, marking the end of his 13th managerial role.
