Bournemouth Secures First Premier League Win Against Wolves
A deflected strike from Marcus Tavernier secured Bournemouth's first Premier League victory of the season, while condemning 10-man Wolves to their second consecutive defeat.
Both teams aimed to recover from losses in their opening matches; however, aside from an early chance for Marshall Munetsi, Bournemouth displayed greater composure, organization, and attacking threat, justifying their early lead.
A poor pass from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde near the edge of Wolves' area allowed Antoine Semenyo to find Tavernier, whose low shot took a significant deflection off Emmanuel Agbadou, ultimately finding the net off the underside of the crossbar.
Semenyo later struck the bar from a cross by David Brooks as Bournemouth sought to extend their advantage. At the other end, Djordje Petrovic made a smart one-handed save from a shot by Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Wolves' chances of making a comeback diminished when Toti Gomes received a straight red card for a foul on Bournemouth striker Evanilson, leaving his team a man down for most of the second half.
Although Jose Sa made an excellent save from a long-range effort by Tyler Adams to keep Wolves in contention, Bournemouth managed to secure a well-deserved three points by controlling the closing stages of the match.
Bournemouth Analysis: Cherries Build on Anfield Performance
Despite leaving Anfield empty-handed in last Friday's Premier League opener, where they lost 4-2 to champions Liverpool, Bournemouth's performance provided plenty of encouragement for manager Andoni Iraola.
The 43-year-old's decision to maintain an unchanged starting XI at Vitality Stadium was expected, given the availability of fit-again players Justin Kluivert and Ryan Christie, along with recent signings Amine Adli and Ben Gannon-Doak. This choice was validated by Bournemouth's strong start.
A 2-0 scoreline would have been a fair reflection of Bournemouth's early dominance; however, Semenyo somehow managed to hit the bar from Brooks' delivery just five minutes after Tavernier's opener.
Jhon Arias had a good chance to equalize for Wolves shortly after halftime, but Toti's dismissal moments later firmly put Bournemouth in control, allowing Iraola to provide valuable playing time to Christie, Adli, and Kluivert in the second half.
Adli, who was part of the Leverkusen team that won the Bundesliga in the 2023-24 season, showed sharpness after coming on for the impressive Brooks, stretching the Wolves defense as the visitors attempted to salvage something from the match late on.
Given Bournemouth's strong start, however, Adli and his fellow substitutes face a challenge in re-establishing themselves in Iraola's lineup.
