Brentford Defeats Bournemouth in EFL Cup Upset
Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago scored against the flow of play as Brentford secured a surprising victory over Bournemouth in the second round of the EFL Cup.
Bournemouth dominated possession in the first half, holding nearly 65%, but a defensive error allowed their Premier League rivals to take the lead.
Defender Kristoffer Ajer connected with a diagonal free-kick, heading the ball back across the penalty area where Carvalho, unmarked, side-footed it past goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
Both teams had opportunities midway through the first half after a lackluster start; Carvalho narrowly missed the outside of the post following a turnover, while Bournemouth's captain Ryan Christie struck the woodwork with a deflected 25-yard shot.
After the break, Bournemouth continued to press for an equalizer but were caught off guard by a rapid Brentford counterattack when Alex Scott lost possession in his own half.
Frank Onyeka led the charge into the penalty area and squared the ball for Igor Thiago, who netted his second goal of the season.
In response, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola introduced forwards Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson. The duo nearly combined to reduce the deficit, but Ajer made a crucial goal-line clearance, denying them with goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson out of position.
As full-time approached, Valdimarsson again thwarted Evanilson, encapsulating a frustrating evening for the home side.
Bournemouth has now gone eight consecutive matches without a win against Brentford, suffering six losses and two draws, while conceding two or more goals in seven of those encounters.
