Brentford Triumphs Over Newcastle with Late Goals from Igor Thiago
Igor Thiago scored two late goals as Brentford came from behind to defeat Newcastle United, further extending the visitors' challenging Premier League away record.
Newcastle took the lead in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium when Harvey Barnes struck the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from inside the penalty area.
However, Brentford rallied after the break and equalized when Kevin Schade headed in a goal after Sven Botman inadvertently flicked Michael Kayode's long throw into the path of the forward.
Brentford continued to press for a winner and were awarded a penalty by referee Stuart Attwell after Dan Burn fouled Dango Ouattara inside the box.
Burn, who narrowly escaped a card for an earlier foul on Ouattara, was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Substitute Aaron Ramsdale, making his first league appearance for Newcastle, was tasked with facing Thiago's penalty after an injured Nick Pope was unable to continue following an awkward landing.
Ramsdale's first action of the match was to retrieve the ball from the net, as Thiago expertly sent him the wrong way from the spot.
Thiago then added another goal after Malick Thiaw failed to intercept a through ball, allowing the Brentford striker to finish past Ramsdale once more.
Newcastle, now sitting in 14th place, has not won an away league match since April.
