Brighton Secures Dominant Victory Over Leeds United
Danny Welbeck continued his impressive form, scoring for the third consecutive Premier League match as Brighton & Hove Albion claimed a convincing victory over Leeds United, moving into the top half of the league table.
The 34-year-old forward opened the scoring for Brighton in the 11th minute, executing a close-range volley to complete a well-coordinated team move involving Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer.
This goal marked Welbeck's sixth of the season, with four of those coming in the last three league matches.
Brighton maintained their dominance, with Diego Gomez netting two goals within six minutes of the second half, solidifying a commanding win for manager Fabian Hurzeler's side.
Despite opportunities for further goals, including chances from Welbeck and Minteh, Brighton's success was comprehensive.
Leeds struggled to create significant chances but nearly equalized just before halftime when midfielder Sean Longstaff had a shot blocked inside the box by Jan Paul van Hecke.
As the rain poured at the Amex Stadium, the second half began with a more open play, but Gomez's quick double—his first Premier League goals since May—effectively sealed the match. His first goal came in the 64th minute, tapping in after Minteh's excellent work on the right, followed by a powerful finish from a cutback by former Leeds player Georginio Rutter.
This victory marked Brighton's fourth win in ten matches and their first clean sheet of the season.
Leeds United, who have not won at Brighton in the league since 2009, remain in 16th place, five points clear of the relegation zone.
Brighton Analysis: Seagulls Finally Capitalize on Opportunities
After suffering two defeats in a week—first to Manchester United and then in the Carabao Cup against a significantly altered Arsenal—Brighton aimed to regroup at home.
A recurring theme in those losses was their failure to convert opportunities. Brighton outshot their opponents, attempting 15 shots against United and 17 against Arsenal, yet found themselves outscored.
When Yasin Ayari managed to break free from Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu and shot directly at goalkeeper Lucas Perri nine minutes into the match, it felt reminiscent of earlier frustrations.
However, Welbeck's goal just two minutes later eased those concerns as Minteh skillfully lifted the ball over the Leeds defense, allowing Wieffer to set up Welbeck for a straightforward finish.
Welbeck had previously scored twice in victories over Chelsea and Newcastle, and also found the net in the loss at Old Trafford, providing England manager Thomas Tuchel with plenty to consider ahead of upcoming matches against Serbia and Albania.
Further optimism for Hurzeler came from Gomez, who, stepping in for Maxim de Cuyper, secured the win with his second-half brace, showcasing the finishing prowess that had been lacking in recent outings.
Brighton also celebrated their second clean sheet in 22 league games, extending their unbeaten home run to nine matches.
