Bristol City Dominates Sheffield United in Championship Opener
Bristol City delivered a stunning performance against Sheffield United, winning 4-1 at Bramall Lane on the opening day of the Championship.
The match mirrored last season's play-off semi-finals, which Sheffield United won 6-0 on aggregate. However, this time, Scott Twine was the star of the show, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals in a remarkable away display.
Twine set the tone early, scoring a brilliant right-footed free kick from 25 yards that found the top corner, leaving Blades goalkeeper Michael Cooper with no chance. Just four minutes later, Twine nearly doubled the lead, but his shot from the edge of the area was deflected over the bar.
Sheffield United responded by leveling the score. Callum O'Hare, after losing possession, regained the ball and exchanged passes with Gustavo Hamer before slipping it to Tyreese Campbell, who fired a left-footed shot past Radek Vitek.
Despite dominating possession in the first half, with 77%, Sheffield United struggled to convert their chances. Louie Barry and Harrison Burrows both came close, but Bristol City took the lead again with a well-crafted goal. New signing Emil Riis held the ball on the left, cut inside, and found Twine, who set up Ross McCrorie to score with a precise shot into the bottom corner.
United continued to press, but went into halftime trailing, having failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities, including seven consecutive shots on goal.
The second half began dramatically, with Anis Mehmeti scoring for Bristol City just 41 seconds in, guiding home a cross from Riis. Twine then came close to scoring again before making it 4-1, as his shot deflected off Tyler Bindon, leaving Cooper stranded after a mistake from Rhys Norrington-Davies.
This goal effectively ended the contest. City had further chances, including a close-range effort from Riis and a brilliant save by Vitek from a header by Peck. Substitute Sinclair Armstrong nearly added a fifth, but Cooper managed to block his near-post shot after a well-timed break.
Main Talking Points
Before the match, discussions centered around how Sheffield United would rebound from their disappointing play-off final loss to Sunderland, which left them outside the Premier League for another year. This setback resulted in Chris Wilder's departure as manager, with Ruben Selles stepping in after previous roles at Southampton and Reading.
While Sheffield United's attacking play showed promise, they made critical errors in possession and appeared vulnerable defensively without injured player Jack Robinson. In contrast, Bristol City, having suffered a significant loss in the play-offs just 89 days prior, will take immense confidence from this victory as they aim for promotion under new coach Gerhard Struber. Twine's performance was particularly noteworthy, creating constant threats, while Riis also impressed on his debut.
Despite this defeat, Sheffield United's depth suggests they will remain title contenders, although Selles gave the team a stern talking-to on the pitch post-match. Bristol City, however, has made a strong statement about their own ambitions this season.
Twine's Standout Performance
From the outset, Twine was exceptional for Bristol City. His free-kick was a standout moment, and his assist for McCrorie's goal was perfectly timed. He could have scored more before setting up Mehmeti's goal, and his second strike was a fitting reward for his individual brilliance. The Blades struggled to contain him as he moved fluidly between the lines, becoming the focal point of nearly all of City’s attacking plays. Twine received a well-deserved standing ovation from the travelling fans when he was substituted with 20 minutes remaining. After scoring just five league goals last season following his permanent move from Burnley, if he continues this form, he could emerge as one of the Championship's most potent attacking talents.
Upcoming Matches
Sheffield United faces a challenging schedule ahead, starting with an away match against Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, followed by a Championship fixture against Swansea City next Saturday. Meanwhile, Bristol City will enjoy back-to-back home games, first against Milton Keynes Dons in the League Cup on Tuesday, and then hosting newly-promoted Charlton Athletic at Ashton Gate the following week.
