Bristol City Dominates Sheffield Wednesday in Championship Clash
Bristol City inflicted further pain on struggling Sheffield Wednesday with a convincing victory at Hillsborough in the Championship.
The first half proved to be particularly challenging for the hosts, as frustrated Wednesday fans voiced their discontent regarding the ongoing ownership of Dephon Chansiri.
City took control early in the match, with debutant Harry Amass scoring an own goal within the first five minutes. Further goals from Emil Riis and Anis Mehmeti ensured that City secured the points before halftime.
Despite a squad weakened by summer departures and financial constraints, Wednesday showed some improvement after the break, managing to reduce City’s attacking threat. However, Mehmeti struck the post in the 64th minute, and the Owls were unable to register a shot on target, ultimately keeping the scoreline respectable.
This defeat marks Wednesday's fourth loss in five matches this season, leaving them second from bottom with just one point, while their city rivals, Sheffield United, sit below them after losing all five of their games, including a 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Bristol City remains unbeaten and climbs to third in the table, just two points behind leaders Middlesbrough.
Eighteen-year-old Amass was one of three changes made by Wednesday as they sought to improve their dismal total of one point from the first five matches. Unfortunately for the young debutant, who joined on loan from Manchester United, his start was marred by an own goal when Rob Dickie’s shot deflected off him following a cutback from Mehmeti.
Riis nearly extended the lead just four minutes later, capitalizing on a mistake by Yann Valery, but City’s forward was thwarted by a good save from goalkeeper Ethan Horvath while chants against Chansiri echoed around the stadium.
City’s second goal came from a poor clearance intercepted by Jason Knight, allowing Mehmeti to deliver a perfectly weighted pass to Riis, who calmly slotted the ball through Horvath’s legs.
Mehmeti then added a goal of his own, skillfully controlling a cross from Scott Twine at the back post and firing in from close range to make it 3-0.
The winger could have increased his tally shortly after, but Horvath made another impressive save, and Mehmeti missed from a tight angle after rounding the keeper.
Ike Ugbo had the best chance for the Owls, sending a shot wide from Max Lowe’s cross as the hosts struggled to keep pace with City’s fluid passing and incisive play.
After the break, Mehmeti came close to scoring again, hitting the post with a left-footed shot following good work from Ross McCrorie. Wednesday's troubles were compounded when Amass had to leave the pitch due to injury shortly after.
Jamal Lowe finally had a rare shot for the hosts with 16 minutes remaining, but he fired high over the bar, while Mehmeti curled an effort just wide moments later.

It’s been a long time since Bristol City won at this stadium, and it feels like the right moment to achieve that success."
