Bristol City Dominates Watford in FA Cup Match
Emil Riis achieved his first hat-trick for Bristol City as the Robins secured a convincing victory over Championship rivals Watford, advancing to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
City struck early, taking the lead in just the second minute when Riis directed a powerful header into the net from a looping cross by Neto Borges. Riis then turned provider, assisting Anis Mehmeti for the hosts' second goal.
Defender Rob Atkinson added a third with a header before Riis scored twice more, effectively sealing the match despite a consolation goal from Watford's Jack Grieves.
Watford, who had been enjoying an impressive run with four consecutive wins and seven games unbeaten, fielded a significantly altered starting XI that struggled to threaten a vibrant Bristol City side.
Bristol City opened the scoring early after a long ball from Mehmeti found Borges, who then lifted it over to the back post for Riis to head home. Watford responded with attempts from Vivaldo Semedo and Nestory Irankunda, but their efforts went astray.
In the 37th minute, City doubled their lead when captain Jason Knight located Riis in space. Riis then delivered a pass across the goal for Mehmeti to strike into the net.
After the break, Riis missed a couple of opportunities to extend the lead further, but Atkinson capitalized on Scott Twine's curling free-kick to head in the third goal. Riis then scored his second, finishing off a pass from Neto Borges.
Although Bristol City could not maintain a clean sheet, with Irankunda assisting Grieves for Watford's consolation goal, they ended on a high note. On-loan West Ham midfielder George Earthy, who recently returned to Ashton Gate after a successful loan spell last season, set up Riis for his hat-trick goal.
'A Statement Performance' - Reaction
Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber spoke to BBC Radio Bristol:
"Performances like today elevate my expectations, as well as those of the players. We demonstrated our capabilities numerous times. Against a formidable team like Watford, known for their speed and dynamism, we handled the situation exceptionally well.
"Our performance level has been commendable over the last two weeks, with each player stepping outside of their comfort zone. We can aspire for success in the next round and in the Championship. This performance serves as a statement, both for ourselves and in broader contexts."
On Emil Riis: "He is a talented striker, and with consistent performances like this, we can certainly compete effectively against top teams at this level."
Watford manager Javi Gracia commented to BBC Three Counties Radio:
"Before the match, I emphasized to the players the importance of this competition, recalling my positive memories from reaching the FA Cup final with Watford in 2019. The team was motivated, but we performed better in the first half than in the second. We had opportunities that we failed to convert, while our opponents capitalized on theirs.
"In the second half, we did not compete as required. I am unsure what transpired, but our defensive play was lacking, allowing the opponent too many chances. This is an area we need to address and improve to maintain our standards in the Championship."
