Cameroon Advances to Last 16 with Victory Over Mozambique
Christian Kofane scored a stunning first international goal, while Bryan Mbeumo was substituted at halftime as Cameroon secured a comeback victory over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), finishing second in Group F.
Despite their win, Cameroon faces a challenging match against South Africa in the Round of 16. They find themselves on the more difficult side of the draw after the defending champions, Ivory Coast, clinched a last-minute victory against Gabon, winning 3-2 and narrowly edging Cameroon for the top spot in Group F based on goal difference.
Mozambique, currently ranked 102nd by FIFA, had a brief moment of glory when they took the lead with Geny Catamo's exquisite goal in the 23rd minute. This marked their first-ever victory at an Afcon finals, having previously defeated Gabon by the same scoreline.
Nene's own goal leveled the match for Cameroon just five minutes later, followed by Kofane's remarkable goal ten minutes after halftime, sealing the comeback for the five-time champions.
Next, Cameroon will head to Rabat to face South Africa on Sunday at 19:00 GMT. Should they advance, they could potentially meet Nigeria in the quarter-finals, followed by a clash with host nation and tournament favorites Morocco in the semi-finals.
Mozambique, having qualified as one of the four best third-placed teams from the six groups, will make their second-round debut against Nigeria in Fes on Monday at 19:00 GMT.
