Celtic's Revival Under Martin O'Neill Following Turbulent Tenure
Celtic fans may soon wake up and wonder if the tumultuous 33-day tenure of Wilfried Nancy was merely a bad dream.
In early December, Martin O'Neill oversaw a functional 1-0 defeat of Dundee at Celtic Park, marking the end of his previous interim management. This match was also the last time Celtic managed to prevent their opponents from scoring.
Fast forward to Saturday, and O'Neill's return brought a significant turnaround. In his first match back, he guided Celtic to a dominant 4-0 victory over a lackluster Dundee United.
This win marked O'Neill's 20th triumph against Dundee United, maintaining his perfect record against them.
Under O'Neill's leadership, Celtic has achieved eight wins in nine matches this season, showcasing a noticeable calming influence, with players seamlessly resuming their strong performances.
‘It’s Been a Strange Old Week’
O'Neill noted that the match was not just a return to form but also a restoration of confidence, as he shared with BBC Sport Scotland.
"It was delightful," he remarked. "We played really well and won quite convincingly. The players have to do the playing, and it’s been a strange old week. I’ve come back in again—perhaps to haunt them as much as anything else—but the players did brilliantly, absolutely brilliantly.
The crowd was magnificent. Even during our less impressive moments, they supported us. Today was fantastic, with a great atmosphere. Now, as we compete for the championship, we need the crowd behind us.
"Winning was our main goal, but the performance was terrific—I don’t want to overlook that. We played very well, regained our confidence, and it was lovely to win."
In the championship battle O'Neill referenced, Celtic has a seasoned campaigner back at the helm.
With Liam Scales reinstated in central defense, the team appeared organized and solid, a stark contrast to their previous vulnerabilities.
O'Neill effectively utilized players in their optimal positions against United, resulting in contributions from four different goal scorers, allowing wingers Yang Hyun-jun and Sebastian Tounekti to focus on attacking without defensive concerns, while the midfield, controlled by Arne Engels, delivered the crucial second goal.

The decision to part ways with O'Neill and his coaching team in early December now seems increasingly illogical.
The disarray experienced during Nancy's brief tenure has been replaced by a sense of normalcy.
The defense looked solid, with Scales effectively covering any lapses from his partners, Auston Trusty, Kieran Tierney, and newcomer Julian Araujo on the wings.
Returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Tunisian winger Tounekti posed a threat on the left flank, while Yang's resurgence continues under O'Neill's guidance.
If any psychological damage lingered from the six defeats suffered during Nancy's short stint, this victory likely helped erase those memories.
However, Celtic must now navigate a challenging series of away matches, including a tough game against high-flying Falkirk, a daunting trip to Bologna, and a clash with league leaders Hearts.
Despite the challenges ahead, O'Neill appears poised to tackle them head-on, though he will need support from the recruitment department to maintain Celtic's grip on the Premiership title.
