'Coventry Are Full of Goals'
Coventry City, who reached the play-offs last season, made a significant statement with a commanding 7-1 victory over QPR. Manager Frank Lampard praised the performance as one of "quality, mentality, and attitude."
Parkin: "Coventry are full of goals – they've scored 12 in just two games. Last year, I was concerned about their reliance on Jack Rudoni, but now they are seeing contributions from players like Victor Torp, Brandon Thomas-Asante, and Haji Wright, which gives them a strong opportunity to replicate their success from last season. My only criticism towards the end of last year was their tendency to be one-dimensional, often relying on crosses into the box. However, they appear to be scoring a variety of goals now. Typically, teams experience a hangover after losing in the play-offs, but nobody expected them to reach that stage last year. Under Frank Lampard, they have improved significantly, allowing them to focus on the positives from the latter half of last season and aggressively pursue success this year. This win is a powerful statement, especially given their scoring prowess. It's crucial they retain Bobby Thomas and Rudoni amidst ongoing speculation about their futures."
'Worrying' Scoreline for 'Threadbare' QPR
In stark contrast, QPR conceded five goals to Coventry within the first half. Despite Richard Kone scoring a late consolation goal, the 7-1 defeat leaves them winless under new manager Julien Stephan.
Parkin: "Some players are still acclimating. Kone's late goal indicates he could be a valuable signing, but they have brought in a few players from lower divisions, and the squad appears somewhat patched together and threadbare. I didn't expect such a heavy defeat, which is quite alarming. For QPR fans, this should serve as a wake-up call about how effective Marti Cifuentes was in maximizing the potential of a squad that isn't among the strongest in the Championship. Losing by seven goals is a deeply concerning outcome for any team."
Off-Field Issues Bringing Owls Players Together
Sheffield Wednesday seemed destined for a third defeat after conceding two first-half goals to Wrexham. However, the troubled South Yorkshire club rallied with a goal from Barry Bannan, followed by an equalizer from Bailey Cadamarteri nine minutes from time, securing their first point of the season.
Parkin: "They are somewhat limited in terms of their bench, relying on younger players, but the starting eleven is quite strong and experienced, featuring several leaders. Sheffield Wednesday has been competitive in every match; they lost at home to Stoke, but performed well against Leicester on the opening day and again against Wrexham, so I’m not surprised by their resilience. Despite the turmoil off the pitch, I can draw from my own experience at Luton during financial struggles and relegations; such challenges can foster unity. They need to cultivate that siege mentality."
'Patience' Required but Selles Needs a Result
Sheffield United's decline continues as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Millwall, leaving them at the bottom of the Championship. Ruben Selles, who took over from Chris Wilder in the summer, has now lost his first three matches in charge.
Parkin: "This situation is the opposite of Coventry's. Sheffield United was in the promotion race for a long time, and many players were close to reaching the Premier League. The manner of their defeats is hard to overcome. Some players may still believe they can move up, but the squad has its weaknesses. They require one or two new signings, and Selles is still figuring out the best formation and personnel. A period of calm and patience is essential, but he must secure a result soon, as a home loss to Millwall will only heighten tensions among supporters after a winless start to the season."
'Brilliant' Stoke and Boro Win Again
Stoke City and Middlesbrough both continued their perfect starts to the season, each achieving three wins from three games. Stoke managed to hold on with ten men to defeat Southampton 2-1, while Middlesbrough secured a 2-1 victory at Norwich.
Parkin: "Both teams have fantastic stories this season. Middlesbrough wasn't expected to start strong after a poor pre-season, with a new manager and a shift in tactics to a back three. I didn’t anticipate their defensive prowess. Today marked the first goal they’ve conceded in three matches. My hope for Stoke fans is that they enjoy a season filled with excitement and entertaining football. Whether they have enough to reach the play-offs remains uncertain, but providing fans with thrilling matches and value for their money is certainly welcome."
