Chelsea Approves Transfers to Borussia Dortmund, Exceeding £270m in Sales
Chelsea FC has granted Borussia Dortmund permission to fly Carney Chukwuemeka and Aaron Anselmino to Germany, facilitating transfers that will push the club's total player sales this summer beyond £270 million.
Chukwuemeka, 21, who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Dortmund, is poised to make a permanent switch for approximately £24 million, which includes a substantial sell-on clause.
The England Under-20 international expressed a strong desire to return to the Westfalenstadion, despite interest from RB Leipzig, and is currently finalizing the details of his move.
This transfer will elevate Chelsea's total income from player sales this summer to a league-high £273.4 million, nearly balancing the £277 million expended on incoming transfers.
UEFA has informed Chelsea that they must achieve a positive transfer balance this window to register their new signings for this season's Champions League.
This requirement follows a £26.7 million fine imposed on the club for breaching UEFA's financial regulations, along with a squad cost ratio exceeding 80% of their income.
Meanwhile, Anselmino has reached an agreement to join Dortmund on a season-long loan, with no option to buy. The Argentine defender was advised by manager Enzo Maresca that a loan was necessary to secure the playing time essential for his development, given the competition for places within the Chelsea first-team squad.
Despite this loan, he remains a key part of Chelsea's future plans and will assist Dortmund in covering injuries to defenders Niklas Sule, Emre Can, and Nico Schlotterbeck.
Since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa for £20 million in 2022, Chukwuemeka has appeared in 32 matches, while Anselmino made a single substitute appearance during the Club World Cup after his transfer from Boca Juniors in January for £15.6 million.
Chelsea is also looking to make additional signings in the last nine days of the transfer window, with Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons among their targets.
Meanwhile, forwards Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, and Tyrique George are expected to depart, and Chelsea could sell as many as nine players, including those in the so-called 'bomb squad', with Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, and Axel Disasi being considered for transfer.
