Chelsea Defeats Fulham 2-0 Amid Controversial Refereeing
Striker Joao Pedro continued his impressive scoring streak, helping Chelsea secure a 2-0 victory over rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge, amidst several controversial refereeing decisions.
Joao Pedro netted the opening goal in first-half injury time, marking his fifth goal in five starts since his £55 million transfer from Brighton. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez added a second-half penalty to seal the win.
Referee Robert Jones was at the center of attention due to a series of contentious decisions. Notably, he disallowed a goal from Fulham midfielder Josh King in the 21st minute. The video assistant referee (VAR), Michael Salisbury, ruled that Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz had stepped on Trevoh Chalobah during the build-up.
After reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, Jones upheld the VAR's decision, despite what appeared to be minimal contact during a natural movement by Muniz, who was facing away from the goal.
Joao Pedro further capitalized on Fulham's dominance in the first half by scoring with a header from Fernandez's corner just before the halftime whistle.
Fernandez then converted a penalty to secure the victory after Ryan Sessegnon was deemed to have handled the ball in the penalty area. This decision, too, sparked frustration from Fulham manager Marco Silva, who expressed his discontent with referee Jones.
Despite losing striker Liam Delap to a hamstring injury early in the match, Chelsea managed to secure a crucial win before the international break.
