Chelsea Held to Goalless Draw in Premier League Opener Against Crystal Palace
Chelsea deployed six new attackers, acquired for a total of £250 million, in their Premier League opener but failed to secure a goal against Crystal Palace.
Joao Pedro, who was signed from Brighton for £55 million this summer, led the attack. Winger Jamie Gittens, recently acquired from Borussia Dortmund for £52 million, made his debut on one wing, while £45 million winger Pedro Neto occupied the opposite flank.
Cole Palmer, an attacking midfielder purchased for £40 million, played in the number 10 position. Despite Chelsea's offensive talent, it was Crystal Palace that dominated the early stages and nearly took the lead.
Midfielder Eberechi Eze struck a powerful free-kick in the 13th minute, but the goal was disallowed by VAR due to Palace captain Marc Guehi being positioned too close to Chelsea's defensive wall.
In the second half, Chelsea introduced two additional new signings: £29 million winger Estevao Willian, who joined from Palmeiras, and £30 million former Ipswich striker Liam Delap. Both players squandered significant opportunities, along with substitute Andrey Santos, as the match ended in a disappointing goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.
Though it was only the first match of the season and no titles are determined at this stage, Chelsea will face scrutiny if they do not build on their recent Club World Cup victory.
Some analysts have predicted that Chelsea could contend for the title, but they must enhance their creativity and goal-scoring capabilities to compete with reigning champions Liverpool, as well as Arsenal and Manchester City, over the course of the 38-game season.
Nonetheless, the club's primary objective remains to secure a top-four finish and qualify for next season's Champions League.
Performance Analysis
Upon reviewing the match statistics, Chelsea will notice a concerning detail: they managed only three shots on target, one fewer than Crystal Palace throughout the match.
On a more positive note, Chelsea recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.81, surpassing Palace's 1.07. This was the highest xG recorded by Chelsea in a league match without scoring since 2025.
The last time Chelsea had such a number of chances without finding the net was during a 2-0 defeat at Ipswich in December of the previous year.
Statistics indicate that 88% of teams with an xG between 1.7 and 1.9 have scored at least once since the beginning of the 2022-23 Premier League season. This highlights a combination of unfortunate circumstances and poor finishing, with Chelsea's best chance, according to Opta, being a wayward shot by midfielder Santos on his weaker left foot in the closing moments.
Future Outlook for Chelsea
At this early stage of the season, Chelsea is unlikely to panic. However, they recognize that success in the Club World Cup does not necessarily translate to the Premier League, especially following a condensed 13-day pre-season after becoming world champions in July.
Manager Enzo Maresca was hesitant to attribute the team's performance to a lack of pre-season preparation, stating, "I don’t think so, because until the end we competed. We tried to win the game. I think we had some chances at the end with Estevao and Andrey Santos. So that showed that we probably competed quite well overall. For sure, they had already played several games in pre-season. We played two games last week but tried to share minutes. So the real game for us was today. But slowly, slowly we’re going to improve."
New signings Joao Pedro, Gittens, Estevao, and Delap may require time to acclimatize and develop synergy with their teammates. Joao Pedro appears the most ready to contribute, having scored three goals in his first three competitive starts for Chelsea after cutting short his holiday in Brazil to participate in the Club World Cup.
This contrasts with Palace, who fielded 10 of the same players from their FA Cup final and Community Shield victories against Manchester and Liverpool, with only injured midfielder Daichi Kamada absent from the lineup.
Maresca's significant concern is the serious injury to defender Levi Colwill, which he believes hampers their ability to play out from the back. The Italian coach has urged the club to sign a new centre-back, but they have instructed him to make do with the current squad. Academy graduate Josh Acheampong received praise from Maresca for stepping in for Colwill, with the manager noting, "Today he did very well, he dealt with [Jean-Philippe] Mateta effectively. Overall, he had a good game."
Striker Nicolas Jackson was suspended due to a red card received against Newcastle late last season, but even if available, he may not have been selected. Chelsea remains open to selling Jackson and fellow attacker Christopher Nkunku, while also looking to add a forward, with Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig's versatile attacker Xavi Simons among their targets before the transfer window closes on September 1.
