Chelsea Investigates Incident Following Defeat to Aston Villa
Chelsea Football Club is conducting an investigation after a bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa bench following their 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
After the final whistle, an open plastic bottle was hurled at the Villa bench, splashing staff and players with what appeared to be water.
One member of the Aston Villa staff indicated towards the section from which the bottle originated, suggesting it came from an area populated by Chelsea fans and staff.
The identity of the individual responsible for the incident remains unknown. Chelsea has initiated an investigation but has not yet issued an official statement.
It is also uncertain whether referee Stuart Attwell and his officials witnessed the incident or if it will be noted in his match report. BBC Sport has reached out to the Football Association for further comment.
In the match, Villa substitute Ollie Watkins scored twice to overturn Joao Pedro's first-half goal for Chelsea. Unai Emery's team has now matched a club record with 11 consecutive wins across all competitions and currently sits three points behind league leaders Arsenal in third place. Chelsea is positioned fifth ahead of Sunday’s matches.
