Colwill Confident Ahead of EFL Cup Clash Against Wrexham
Rubin Colwill is optimistic that Cardiff City can secure a victory against Wrexham in the EFL Cup, following their impressive win over Premier League side Burnley in the previous round.
The two teams will face off for the first time in 21 years at the Stok Cae Ras on Tuesday evening at 20:00 BST.
Joel Colwill, Rubin's brother, and Callum Robinson were instrumental in the Bluebirds' surprising 2-1 upset against Burnley, and Rubin believes this result has instilled confidence throughout the squad.
"The match against Burnley was a significant boost for us. We played well against a Premier League team and came out on top. This victory gives us the belief that we can compete against teams from higher divisions, not just in League One," the midfielder stated.
Currently, Cardiff City is at the top of League One, sharing points with Stevenage and Bradford City.
Despite suffering a last-minute defeat to Bolton, which marked their third loss of the league season, Colwill emphasized that the team's focus has shifted to the upcoming encounter with Wrexham, expressing excitement for this "semi-derby".
Colwill remarked, "It's thrilling to face a team that is currently a division above us, which adds extra significance to the match. It will be a challenge, but we are all eager for it. While it may be considered a semi-derby due to the distance, there are few Welsh clubs in the English league system. Any meeting with a Welsh team inevitably brings a rivalry, and we look forward to the opportunity to compete against them."
The Wales international acknowledged Wrexham's remarkable journey, describing it as "fantastic for Welsh football" and beneficial for the people of Wrexham. However, he assured fans that the narrative surrounding Wrexham would not affect Cardiff's determination as they travel to North Wales, aiming to advance to the EFL Cup quarter-finals and eliminate their Welsh rivals.
