Coventry City Celebrates Historic Victory and Stadium Purchase
Coventry City marked a significant weekend for the club by defeating QPR with an impressive scoreline of 7-1.
Haji Wright, Jack Rudoni, and Victor Torp each scored twice, with Brandon Thomas-Asante also contributing to the emphatic win. The Sky Blues have now scored 12 goals in their last two Championship matches.
Richard Kone managed to net a consolation goal for Rangers in stoppage time, marking his first goal since joining from Wycombe.
This resounding victory came shortly after Coventry City announced the completion of their stadium purchase, the Coventry Building Society Arena, which they described as a "pivotal moment" in the club's history.
This week also commemorates the 20th anniversary of City’s inaugural match at the stadium, which was also a victory against QPR, ending 3-0 in August 2005.
In the years that followed, the club faced financial difficulties, homelessness, a drop to the fourth tier, and serious uncertainty regarding its future.
However, acquiring the stadium highlights a turnaround in their fortunes. The victory underlines the impressive progress made under manager Frank Lampard, raising hopes that Coventry could return to the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in 2001.
Coventry was already five goals up by halftime, with the opening goal coming from a well-executed play in the 12th minute. Centre-back Liam Kitching advanced into the Rangers' half and passed to Torp, who found Milan van Ewijk on the right. Van Ewijk delivered a first-time ball to Wright, who scored from 12 yards out.
Things worsened for Rangers when they attempted to build from the back. Kieran Morgan's poor pass to Steve Cook was intercepted by Rudoni, who set up Thomas-Asante to score past goalkeeper Joe Walsh.
Once again, Morgan was at fault, playing Karamoko Dembele into trouble. Matt Grimes capitalized on the error, driving forward to assist Rudoni, whose shot deflected off Cook to make it three.
The fourth goal came after another defensive blunder by Rangers. Thomas-Asante held off Cook and assisted Wright, who scored his second of the match.
Rudoni added a fifth with a low shot into the bottom corner just before halftime.
The scoring continued shortly after the break, as QPR's defense faltered again. Liam Morrison, Jimmy Dunne, and Nicolas Madsen failed to clear the ball, allowing Ephron Mason-Clark to redirect it to Torp, whose shot found the bottom corner despite Walsh's attempt to save.
Torp capped off the scoring with a stunning 30-yard curling strike into the far corner, marking Coventry’s seventh goal.
Kone, who came on as a substitute, scored for Rangers from close range after Dembele's free-kick had been headed back across goal by Morrison.
