Coventry City Dominates Millwall with Four-Goal Victory
Haji Wright starred with a brace as Coventry City delivered a commanding four-goal victory over Millwall at the New Den.
The United States international scored once in each half, helping the Championship's top-scoring team secure a comfortable win.
Wright's goals were complemented by late strikes from Ellis Simms and Kaine Kesler-Hayden, allowing the Sky Blues to extend their unbeaten league run and climb to second place in the standings.
Under the management of Frank Lampard, the team now sits just two points behind league leaders Middlesbrough as the season progresses.
Coventry displayed a professional performance, securing three points against a Millwall side that has struggled to find the net, failing to score in three of their last four home league matches.
Lampard maintained the same starting eleven that triumphed over Birmingham City 3-0 just four days earlier, and his decision paid off as Coventry continued their unbeaten start to the season.
The visitors took the lead when Brandon Thomas-Asante capitalized on a defensive error by Tristan Crama, rounding goalkeeper Steven Benda and setting up Wright for a simple tap-in just before the half-hour mark.
Although Millwall emerged with renewed determination after the break, they struggled to test goalkeeper Carl Rushworth until the final five minutes of the match.
By that time, Coventry had already added three more goals to their tally, bringing their total to 22 in just eight league games—eight more than any other team in the Championship.
Wright's second goal was particularly impressive; he assisted Milan van Ewijk on the right before making a run into the box to head home van Ewijk's precise cross.
Coventry's third goal came nine minutes from time when substitute Simms flicked on a free-kick, leading to Bobby Thomas hitting the crossbar with a header, before Simms nodded the rebound over the line.
Kaine Kesler-Hayden capped off the scoring in the 87th minute, netting his first goal for the club after exchanging passes with the impressive van Ewijk.
Millwall, who fell to 12th place in the table, came close to scoring when they hit the post and Macauley Langstaff forced a fine save from Rushworth, but they failed to apply consistent pressure on Coventry's goal.
Reaction: 'An Outstanding Performance'
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard commented on the match:
"It was an outstanding performance at a challenging venue where they don’t get beaten often. The team's focus was excellent. It was a complete performance, showcasing high pressing and control in the first half, followed by a more compact and dangerous approach in transitions. The team demonstrated different strengths today, all of which were positive.
"We work very hard and have certainly seen progress. I believe the fans can relate to what they are witnessing on the pitch, including the players’ focus and passion. It will be challenging to achieve our season goals due to the size of our squad and the obstacles of this league, but if we maintain this unity and continue our performance, we have a chance."
Millwall manager Alex Neil remarked:
"I thought we had as many chances as Coventry did, but we weren’t clinical enough, and the first goal changed the dynamics of the game. We made a mistake, and they capitalized on it.
"After that, there were several misplaced passes in the following minutes, indicating that we were rattled. We started the second half well, creating good opportunities to score, but we failed to convert any.
"Their second goal came from a situation that was uncharacteristic for us, which made things difficult. Ultimately, the game was decided in both penalty areas, and we simply weren’t good enough."
