David Watson Shines for Kilmarnock Amid Transfer Speculations
Another Saturday, another masterclass from David Watson for Kilmarnock.
The 20-year-old midfielder has fought his way back into the starting lineup since the arrival of Stuart Kettlewell as manager this summer, establishing himself as a key player for the club.
This resurgence follows a disappointing season under Derek McInnes, during which Watson lost his place in the team around the start of the year and struggled to regain a regular spot.
This drop in form was unexpected, considering he had won both the PFA Scotland and the Scottish Football Writers' Association young player of the year awards the previous season.
McInnes had previously remarked, "Davie is going to have a good career; there’s no doubt about that. How well he does will be determined by how many goals he scores in a season." After his strike in a 2-0 victory over St Mirren, Watson has already netted three goals this term, although his contributions extend beyond just scoring.
Historically, he has recorded only five goals per full season with Kilmarnock and has five assists across his career. However, Watson's strikes are often spectacular. Notable goals include a last-minute winner against Aberdeen, a looping half-volley against St Johnstone, and a solo run from his own half against St Mirren.
Last season, he scored an overhead kick against Dundee United and another impressive effort away at St Johnstone. While he may not be a prolific scorer, he is certainly known for scoring remarkable goals.
In addition to his goal-scoring, Watson ranks highly in several underlying statistics. He is tied for fourth in the league for goal contributions this season and ranks well for completed dribbles (eighth), tackles (ninth), and duels won (eleventh). No other midfielder matches his performance in blocking shots, winning possession in the final third, or drawing fouls.
In essence, Watson is a dynamic and combative player, contributing significantly in various aspects beyond just attacking play.
Will He Follow Wales Out of Kilmarnock?
Kilmarnock faces the challenge of retaining Watson as interest in him continues to grow with his contract nearing its end. His current deal expires at the end of the season, and like fellow rising star Bobby Wales, Watson might be tempted to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Kettlewell is eager to keep him, stating, "He’s a breath of fresh air to work with; he’s quality," following Watson's goal that helped secure Kilmarnock's second consecutive win and third place in the league. The Rugby Park manager added, "We talk about non-negotiables—good body language, energy, application, and desire to play the game—he embodies all of that. I enjoy watching him and working with him every day. He brings a spark to the team and motivates his teammates, which is an excellent trait for someone so young."
If Watson is considering a move, he doesn't need to look far for inspiration. Former Scotland Under-21 teammate Lennon Miller has recently earned his first caps for Scotland and secured a move to Serie A side Udinese. At one point, the two were seen as having similar career trajectories, and with more first-team experience, Watson may be on the verge of a significant move.
