Derby County has successfully signed United States striker Patrick Agyemang from Major League Soccer's Charlotte FC for a potential fee of £7.3 million.
The 24-year-old forward joins Pride Park on a four-year contract, with the initial transfer fee believed to be around £5.8 million before add-ons. This move comes shortly after Agyemang featured for the USA in their Gold Cup final loss to Mexico.
In a statement confirming his arrival, the Rams announced that Agyemang will undergo "routine" surgery to address a long-standing hernia issue, which is expected to sideline him for the opening matches of the Championship season.
Agyemang has scored 17 goals in 59 MLS regular-season games for Charlotte FC, having been selected as the 12th overall pick in the 2023 draft from the University of Rhode Island. Within two years, he was called up by USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino and has since scored five goals in 12 international appearances.
Agyemang is the second high-profile striker acquisition for Derby this summer, following the signing of Luton forward Carlton Morris, whose fee remains undisclosed. With Agyemang's potential cost exceeding £7 million, he becomes the most expensive signing since David Clowes took over the club following its administration in 2022.
While Derby has not officially disclosed the fee, Charlotte FC confirmed they received a club-record "multi-million-dollar" amount for Agyemang, along with a sell-on percentage.
"Patrick's impressive rise over the past 18 months attracted interest from numerous European clubs, and ultimately Derby County's offer was compelling enough for both the club and player to reach an agreement," said Charlotte's general manager Zoran Krneta.
"A successful deal must benefit both the club and the player, and in this case, it achieves both. Patrick becomes the first player in our club's history to progress through our player pathway and be sold in a multi-million-dollar transfer."
