Diego Gomez Shines in Brighton's 6-0 Victory Over Barnsley
Diego Gomez scored four goals, including an impressive first-half hat-trick, as Brighton advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a decisive victory over League One side Barnsley.
The Paraguayan midfielder stole the spotlight at Oakwell, giving the Seagulls an early lead with a close-range finish. He then completed a remarkable 24-minute treble with two stunning long-range strikes.
Gomez, who joined Brighton from Inter Miami last January, added to his tally with a magnificent rising shot from the edge of the penalty area. However, his third goal was the highlight, as he capitalized on a headed clearance from Jake Rooney, unleashing a swerving first-time shot from over 30 yards that left goalkeeper Murphy Cooper with no chance.
In the second half, Davis Keillor-Dunn nearly caught Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele off his line with a looping effort from 40 yards that clipped the top of the crossbar, while Jonathan Bland was also denied by the woodwork.
Gomez then secured his fourth goal of the night with a composed finish, before 17-year-old Harry Howell scored his first senior goal for Brighton, curling in a well-placed shot.
Substitute Yasin Ayari rounded off the scoring just two minutes later, as Brighton celebrated their second consecutive 6-0 victory in the competition, having previously defeated Oxford by the same scoreline in the last round.
Fabian Hurzeler's team will learn their fourth-round opponents following the draw that will occur after Arsenal's match against Port Vale on Wednesday evening.
Prior to kickoff, a minute's applause was held in memory of the legendary Barnsley-born cricket umpire Dickie Bird, who passed away at the age of 92.
