Diego Simeone Receives One-Match Ban for Unsporting Conduct
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has been handed a one-match ban for "unsporting conduct" by UEFA following an incident with Liverpool supporters at Anfield earlier this month.
The ban comes after Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored a last-minute winner, sealing a 3-2 victory over Atletico. Simeone's reaction was reportedly provoked by a small group of home fans.
The Argentine manager expressed his frustration to the fourth official while stewards intervened to separate him from the Liverpool supporters. He was eventually escorted away from the scene but continued to voice his discontent before being sent off and walking down the tunnel.
This suspension means Simeone will miss Atletico's upcoming home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday at 20:00 BST.
In a press conference following the match against Liverpool, the 55-year-old expressed regret over his actions, stating, "Firstly I regret the part I played. It’s clear we are in a position where we do not have the right to react, and it is not good when we react."
Simeone acknowledged he "could not remember exactly" what transpired but highlighted the continuous insults he faced from the home crowd throughout the match. He emphasized, "We [managers] are in a position where we are protagonists/standard bearers, and just as we fight against racism and insults in stadiums, we should also advocate for managers against the insults we endure throughout the game."
He added, "It’s not easy to be in the position we are in and receive insults for the whole game. After the third goal, I turned and saw the insults continued, and well, I’m a person."
In related news, Liverpool has been fined 4,000 euros (£3,492) for the throwing of objects during the match.
