Dortmund Secures Victory Over Villarreal in Champions League
Borussia Dortmund climbed to fourth place in the Champions League standings after a decisive victory over 10-man Villarreal, with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice.
The Guinea forward opened the scoring in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, heading in from close range. Villarreal appealed for a handball against Waldemar Anton prior to the goal, but after a lengthy review by the video assistant referee (VAR), the goal was upheld.
The match shifted in favor of the Bundesliga side in the 52nd minute when Villarreal was reduced to 10 players. Former Tottenham defender Juan Foyth received a red card for handling the ball on the goal line while attempting to block a shot from Karim Adeyemi.
Guirassy stepped up to take the resulting penalty, which was saved by Luiz Junior. However, the rebound fell perfectly for Guirassy, who calmly slotted it home.
Dortmund extended their lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute when a defensive clearance inadvertently deflected into the net off Adeyemi.
The German side had another opportunity to score from the penalty spot when Adeyemi was fouled by Sergi Cardona. With Guirassy substituted, Fabio Silva took the penalty but hit the crossbar.
In added time, Dortmund sealed the match with a powerful header from Daniel Svensson, following a cross from Pascal Gross on the right flank.
This victory leaves Dortmund with 10 points from five matches, putting them in a strong position to secure a top-eight finish and avoid the playoff round, with three games remaining.
Villarreal, on the other hand, sits third from bottom with only one point, facing the risk of an early exit from the tournament.
The Spanish side will regret Foyth's dismissal, especially after having a goal disallowed for offside earlier in the match when Tani Oluwaseyi found the net, and Pape Gueye's subsequent effort flew just over the bar from 15 yards.
As the game progressed, Dortmund began to assert their dominance, with Adeyemi nearly scoring after a brilliant run, only for Foyth to clear the danger inside his own six-yard box. Ultimately, Guirassy's early goal proved pivotal as Dortmund secured their third win in this season's competition.
