Dundee Secures Dramatic Win Against Livingston in Scottish Premiership
Dundee achieved their first Scottish Premiership victory of the season with a thrilling finish, as Callum Jones' penalty deep into stoppage time denied Livingston a well-deserved point following a determined comeback.
Steven Pressley's team appeared to be in control after goals from Simon Murray and Joe Westley either side of halftime.
However, an own goal by Clark Robertson and a penalty conceded allowed Jeremy Bokila to equalize for Livingston with only seven minutes remaining. Jones then stepped up to secure all three points after Danny Wilson was penalized for a foul on Charlie Reilly.
This victory elevates Dundee to fifth place in the league, as they were the only top-flight team in action this weekend, with others engaged in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals.
Livingston matched Dundee's intensity for much of the match and seemed poised to move into fifth place themselves, only to drop to eighth and extend their winless streak to 20 away games in the top flight.
Dundee's Cameron Congreve, on loan from Swansea City, had already tested goalkeeper Jerome Prior and found the side netting before assisting the opening goal.
In the 43rd minute, Congreve gathered a long cross, beat his defender, and delivered a low curling cross for Simon Murray, who scored from close range, marking his third goal of the season.
This goal boosted the hosts' confidence, and Finlay Robertson forced Prior into another save before setting up Congreve again, who assisted the second goal in the 66th minute.
In a similar fashion to the first goal, Congreve's low cross was finished by Westley.
Livingston responded with 15 minutes left when Robertson inadvertently deflected a low cross into the six-yard box. The equalizer came when referee Ross Hardie awarded a penalty after Robertson fouled Lewis Smith.
Bokila appeared to have secured a draw for Livingston, but Smith's late attempt was thwarted by Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken at the goal line. Dundee then surged upfield to win the match after a video assistant referee (VAR) review confirmed their penalty decision.
Analysis: Positives for Both Sides in a Thrilling Encounter
This match could have swung in either direction and was unexpected, given that both teams had only scored once in their last four outings.
Had Dundee not secured their first league win, pressure would have increased on Pressley, and even a draw would have kept them near the bottom of the table.
Congreve was instrumental in helping Dundee take the lead, proving to be a worthy substitute for Yan Dhanda as he assisted both goals.
The team displayed commendable resilience to recover from losing their lead and clinch victory in the dying moments.
Livingston manager David Martindale was understandably disappointed at the final whistle. His team showed their own character by coming back from two goals down and nearly snatching a win themselves.
Despite not winning an away match in five attempts and failing to secure victory overall in the same number of games, Martindale can find positives in his team's performance.
Looking Ahead for Both Teams
Dundee will face St Mirren on Saturday, September 27, while Livingston will host Rangers the following day, both matches kicking off at 15:00 BST.
