EFL Highlights: McLean's Insights on Championship and League Performance
Saturday's EFL matches delivered the excitement fans have come to expect.
Aaron McLean, a former striker for Peterborough, Hull, and Bradford, as well as a pundit on Final Score, shared his key takeaways from the Championship, League One, and League Two.
Fantastic Result for Frank Lampard
Coventry City triumphed in a thrilling eight-goal match against Midlands rivals Derby County.
The Sky Blues took the lead twice but found themselves trailing 3-2 before ultimately winning 5-3.
McLean: "It's a fantastic result for Frank Lampard. At one point, it seemed like they might have let it slip when Derby came back, but the character shown by Lampard's side was commendable. This victory is definitely a statement. Since Frank's arrival, he has significantly restored belief within the club. The progress they have made under his guidance is substantial, and they will be looking to build on this momentum for the rest of the season."
Steel City Faces Difficulties
There has been little to celebrate in the Steel City this season.
Both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are yet to earn points after their first two Championship matches, following managerial changes over the summer.
The Blades, who lost last season's Championship play-off final to Sunderland, fell 1-0 to Swansea City, while the struggling Wednesday suffered a 3-0 defeat at home against Stoke City.
McLean: "It's really disappointing for Sheffield United; they seem to be suffering a hangover from last season. With the new manager, Ruben Selles, things don't appear to be coming together at the moment. Sheffield is a tough place to be right now. Sheffield Wednesday is also facing challenges, including a transfer embargo, protests, and poor results on the pitch. It's disheartening to see a club with such a rich history struggling, as Hillsborough can be one of the best venues when the team is winning. Until the club is sold, there may be more difficult days ahead."
Surprise Package Stevenage Leads League One
Stevenage's 2-0 victory over Northampton Town has propelled them to the top of League One.
With three consecutive league wins, Alex Revell's team is currently the only one with a perfect record in the division.
McLean: "Alex Revell has really got the players performing. In a short time, along with his ten new signings, he has instilled belief in the project. Last season, they were inconsistent, which contributed to their decline, but if they maintain their current form, they will certainly be in contention for a play-off spot."
Ten-Man Blackpool Defeats League One Favorites Huddersfield
Ten-man Blackpool secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Huddersfield Town at Bloomfield Road, with all goals scored in the first 31 minutes.
Forward Niall Ennis went from hero to zero, receiving a straight red card in the first half after netting two quick goals, yet Steve Bruce's side held on for their first points of the season.
McLean: "This is a great result for Steve Bruce and Blackpool. They executed a solid performance against one of the title favorites in Huddersfield. Despite making several significant signings, including Alfie May, who is expected to score, Bruce continues to create a hardworking team. Winning 3-2 with ten men highlights the character within the squad."
MK Dons Show Promise
MK Dons delivered an impressive performance, thrashing Cheltenham Town in League Two.
Paul Warne's squad, expected to contend for promotion, has now recorded back-to-back victories following an opening-day draw, positioning them favorably in the early promotion race.
McLean: "They have invested significantly, bringing in experienced players like Nathanial Mendez-Laing and Callum Paterson, who have benefited from Sheffield Wednesday's struggles. Paterson has already contributed two goals and two assists this season. Now that they are gaining momentum, I believe they will be a formidable force."
Aaron McLean shared his insights with BBC Sport's Matthew Cresswell.
