Emotional Tribute to Diogo Jota at Anfield
Liverpool and Wolves paid tribute to Diogo Jota on a poignant day at Anfield, marking the first meeting of his two former clubs since his tragic passing.
The 28-year-old Portugal forward lost his life in a car accident in Spain in July, along with his 25-year-old brother, Andre Silva.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 after a successful three-season stint with Wolves.
On the day of the match, Jota's sons, Dinis and Duarte, joined the matchday mascots on the pitch prior to the Premier League game on Saturday.
The young boys led the Liverpool team onto the field, walking ahead of captain Virgil van Dijk, while Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, was also present to honor his memory.
Before kickoff, a banner reading 'Diogo Jota, forever in our hearts' was displayed in the Kop stand, setting a heartfelt tone for the day.
Chants of "Diogo, Diogo, Diogo" echoed from the Wolves fans in the away section, and the entire Anfield crowd stood in applause during the 20th minute as Liverpool supporters sang in tribute to Jota.
Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring for Liverpool and dedicated his goal to Jota, mimicking the shark-style celebration that the forward was known for.
On the preceding Friday, Wolves players and staff laid wreaths outside Anfield in remembrance of their former teammate, who originally joined the club on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid in 2017 and netted 44 goals in 131 appearances.
During his time with Liverpool, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, contributing to the club's victories in the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022, as well as the Premier League title last season.
In honor of his legacy, the Merseyside club retired Jota's number 20 shirt following his death.
In his program notes ahead of Liverpool's final home fixture of 2025, head coach Arne Slot expressed his hope that the affection surrounding Jota would offer his family some comfort.
"Reflecting on the past year brings a whirlwind of emotions, but it is customary at this time to reflect on everything that has transpired," Slot wrote. "This leads me to think especially of Diogo Jota's family during their first Christmas without him. While I cannot dictate where they might find solace, I can only wish that the love and affection for Diogo brings them some peace."
