England and Wales Set for 105th Football Encounter
England and Wales will face each other for the 105th time on Thursday in a friendly match at Wembley Stadium.
Historically, England has secured 69 victories against Wales, who have won 14 times, with 21 matches ending in a draw.
Since their inaugural meeting in 1879, in which England triumphed 2-1, the two teams have delivered numerous memorable encounters. Here, we reflect on five classic matches between England and Wales.
Wales 0-3 England - November 2022
The most recent clash occurred three years ago during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Marcus Rashford's brace propelled England to victory, allowing them to top Group B and eliminate Wales from the tournament.
Rashford opened the scoring with a free-kick shortly after halftime, followed by a header from Phil Foden six minutes later. Rashford capped the match with a third goal, driving the ball through the legs of Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward.
England's journey ended in the quarter-finals against the eventual champions, France, while Wales concluded their first World Cup appearance since 1958 with just one point from three matches.
England 2-1 Wales - June 2016
In a dramatic Euro 2016 group stage match, England came from behind to secure a thrilling victory, marking their first encounter at a major tournament.
A costly mistake by England goalkeeper Joe Hart allowed Gareth Bale's 30-yard free-kick to sneak in just before halftime. Jamie Vardy quickly equalized early in the second half, and Daniel Sturridge netted a stoppage-time winner, sealing the match for England.
This victory was the highlight of the tournament for England manager Roy Hodgson, who resigned after the team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Iceland. Meanwhile, Wales enjoyed a memorable run, defeating Belgium in the quarter-finals before falling to Portugal in the semi-finals.
England 2-0 Wales - October 2004
After a 20-year hiatus, England and Wales clashed in a World Cup qualifier at Old Trafford. England struck first with a goal from Frank Lampard, whose shot deflected off Michael Owen, followed by a curling effort from David Beckham that found the top corner.
England went on to qualify for the 2006 World Cup as group winners but were eliminated by Portugal in the quarter-finals. Wales, on the other hand, finished second from the bottom in the qualifying group, suffering a 1-0 defeat to England in Cardiff the following year.
Wales 1-0 England - May 1984
Mark Hughes, a rising star at Manchester United, made his Wales debut at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, scoring the only goal with a well-placed header past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
The victory sparked jubilant celebrations among Wales fans, who invaded the pitch at full-time, marking the end of the Home Championship.
Wales 4-1 England - May 1980
Entering the Home Championship match in Wrexham following a victory over Argentina, England had not lost to Wales in 25 years. However, the match took an unexpected turn when local hero Mickey Thomas equalized after England's Paul Mariner had scored from a corner.
Ian Walsh put Wales ahead before halftime, and Leighton James added another goal after the break. England's woes were compounded when Phil Thompson scored an own goal, sealing a stunning 4-1 defeat.
