Falkirk Secures First Top-Flight Victory in 15 Years Against 10-Man Aberdeen
Falkirk achieved their first top-flight victory in 15 years by defeating 10-man Aberdeen, leaving the Dons at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.
Despite having a weekend off, Aberdeen struggled to find their rhythm against a Falkirk side eager to bounce back from a midweek Europa League play-off defeat to FCSB in Romania.
The first half saw Aberdeen dominate, although both teams faced challenges due to strong winds. The Dons created several scoring opportunities, forcing Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain to make crucial saves against Topi Keskinen and Nicolas Milanovic.
At the other end, Aberdeen’s goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov was equally impressive, making a notable save to deflect a powerful shot from Brad Spencer.
As halftime approached, the home side faced a setback when Nicky Devlin received a red card for a robust challenge on Calvin Miller. Initially booked, Devlin's caution was upgraded to a dismissal after referee Ross Hardie reviewed the incident via VAR.
With an extra player, Falkirk seized control in the second half. Mitov made several important saves to deny Dylan Tait and Scott Arfield, while Spencer’s effort was cleared off the line.
Falkirk finally broke the deadlock when substitute Kyrell Wilson, recently signed from Swansea City, scored in the 74th minute, securing three points for John McGlynn's team.
Aberdeen's Need for a Reset
After a demanding few days, Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin may welcome the upcoming international break. How the team responds could significantly impact their season. The Dons are aware of a packed schedule of European and domestic matches in the coming months, but their squad lacks sufficient striking options.
Once again, Aberdeen created numerous scoring chances but failed to convert them. Strengthening their attacking options before the transfer window closes will be crucial for the team's performance moving forward.
Falkirk's Promising Performance
The transition to the Premiership has posed challenges for Falkirk, yet their performance at Pittodrie revealed several positives beyond the victory. The team displayed organization and discipline, effectively capitalizing on their numerical advantage throughout the match.
Falkirk has adapted well to the top tier despite facing injuries. Once the squad is fully fit, John McGlynn's team is expected to pose a significant threat as the season progresses.
Managerial Insights
Falkirk manager John McGlynn commented to BBC Scotland: "I’m absolutely delighted to come up here and get three points. Everyone is going back down to Falkirk very happy. We had to hang in there in the first half. I thought Aberdeen played well, but we also defended well and created opportunities. We made the extra-man advantage count in the second half. I don’t believe the sending off was malicious; it was an honest attempt on the ball, but I haven’t watched it back. We showed good composure. Aberdeen set up very well and made it difficult for us, but we were persistent and kept at it."
Upcoming Matches
Aberdeen will face fellow newly promoted team Livingston at Pittodrie after the international break on September 13 at 15:00 BST. Meanwhile, Falkirk will host St Mirren on the same day at the same time.
