Former Premier League defender George Baldock tragically passed away in a swimming pool accident in Greece, an inquest has revealed.
The 31-year-old was discovered deceased at his residence in Glyfada, southern Athens, on October 9, 2024.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that there were no drugs or alcohol in his system.
The inquest at Milton Keynes Coroner's Court on Wednesday determined the cause of death to be drowning, with senior coroner Tom Osborne concluding it was an accidental occurrence.
Baldock, born in Buckinghamshire, represented Greece internationally and had joined Panathinaikos in May 2024 following a seven-year stint with Sheffield United.
He previously made over 100 appearances for MK Dons from 2009 to 2017.
The post-mortem also revealed that Baldock had an enlarged heart, making him susceptible to heart arrhythmias.
An investigation by Greek police, who unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate the footballer, found no signs of criminal activity.
Baldock had played for Panathinaikos in a 0-0 draw against Olympiacos just three days before his untimely passing.
In a statement released at the time, Baldock's family expressed: "George, you were the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate, and person.
Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought immense joy to those fortunate enough to know you and those who adored you from the stands.
We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you, and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son."
