Glentoran's Dramatic Comeback Secures Victory Over Coleraine
Glentoran staged a remarkable comeback to defeat 10-man Coleraine 2-1, revitalizing their title aspirations on a dramatic night at the Oval.
The visitors took the lead with a goal from Matthew Shevlin just after the hour mark. However, Glentoran equalized with a penalty from Pat Hoban ten minutes before the end, and 'supersub' Jonathan Russell clinched the victory in the 89th minute.
Coleraine faced a setback when midfielder Dylan Boyle was sent off 20 minutes from time for a foul on Michael-John Kamara. The situation worsened for Coleraine as head coach Ruaidhri Higgins was also dismissed during added time.
The match began with intensity, as Coleraine's Jamie Glackin attempted a long-range shot just 50 seconds in, but Glentoran goalkeeper Andrew Mills made a low save. Shortly after, Liam Burt hit the side netting from a Jordan Stewart cross, while Joel Cooper mirrored this at the other end.
In a first half filled with opportunities, Mills denied Shevlin with a deft foot save, while Coleraine's Ryan Schofield held firm against a powerful shot from Daniel Larmour from 15 yards. Joel Cooper had two close chances before halftime, missing a right-footed volley from a tight angle and forcing Mills into a smart save with a left-footed effort.
Shevlin Strikes for Bannsiders
The deadlock was finally broken just after the hour mark by Matthew Shevlin's 12th goal of the season. Dean Jarvis skillfully dispossessed Ryan Cooney and delivered a precise cross. In an attempt to clear, Kamara inadvertently deflected the ball into Shevlin's path, allowing him to nod it into an empty net.
Coleraine's troubles mounted when Dylan Boyle received a red card for a reckless tackle on Kamara in midfield with 20 minutes remaining. Glentoran capitalized on their numerical advantage when Pat Hoban converted a penalty after Dean Jarvis was fouled in the box, putting the hosts level.
With just a minute left, Glentoran took the lead for the first time as substitute Jonathan Russell's cross sailed over goalkeeper Ryan Schofield and into the net. The night ended on a sour note for Coleraine as Higgins was shown a red card in added time.
This victory serves as a significant boost for Glentoran in their pursuit of the title, following a five-match winless streak.
