Graham Potter Set to Become Sweden's Head Coach
Former West Ham manager Graham Potter is poised to accept the position of head coach for the Sweden national football team.
The 50-year-old has been offered the role on a short-term basis as part of efforts to revitalize Sweden's struggling World Cup qualification campaign.
Potter has previously expressed his admiration for Sweden and his interest in the coaching position, leading to rapid progress in discussions.
Sweden has been in search of a new head coach following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson after their 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on Monday, which effectively eliminated their chances of automatic qualification from their group.
The team is set to face Switzerland away before hosting Slovenia in their final two matches, aiming to catch up with second-placed Kosovo, who currently have seven points in Group B.
Despite the challenges, Sweden still has a chance to reach the play-offs without finishing in the top two of Group B, thanks to their strong performance in the 2024-25 Nations League, where they topped their group.
Potter was relieved of his duties at West Ham at the end of September after a disappointing start to the season, which saw the team suffer five losses in six games, leaving them in the relegation zone. During his tenure, he secured just six wins out of 23 matches since joining the club in January.
Nevertheless, Potter is well-regarded in Sweden, having achieved three promotions in four seasons with Ostersund, guiding them from the fourth division to the top flight and winning a domestic cup in 2017. He also enjoyed successful stints at Brighton and Swansea City before taking the helm at Chelsea in 2022, where he was dismissed after seven months.
