Guardiola Prioritizes Player Care Amid Challenging Schedule
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola emphasizes the importance of caring for his players like a parent, especially during a demanding fixture schedule.
In just one week, City achieved victories against Manchester United and Napoli, but they faced a setback with a stoppage-time equalizer against Arsenal on Sunday.
As City prepares to face League One side Huddersfield Town in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, they are contending with an increasing number of injuries.
"First comes the spirit we have shown this week, and you have to take care of this like a father and mother takes care of their sons," Guardiola remarked.
He added, "We can be a stable team, and step by step, as injured players return, we will learn what we can improve upon. Gigi (Gianluigi Donnarumma) will improve, James (Trafford) will improve, and the team will grow stronger."
Striker Erling Haaland will not make the trip to West Yorkshire after being substituted in the 76th minute against Arsenal due to a back issue. However, Guardiola remains optimistic that the Norwegian will be fit for the Premier League match against Burnley on Saturday.
Abdukodir Khusanov was substituted at halftime at the Emirates Stadium, while Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush are sidelined. It remains uncertain if Rayan Ait-Nouri will recover in time from his injury.
After a disappointing previous season, where City failed to secure any major trophies and faced consecutive defeats before the international break, the team has bounced back, remaining unbeaten in their last three matches across all competitions.
"Since I began my managerial career with the second team at Barcelona, I have always asked for one thing: I want the players to give everything on the pitch," Guardiola stated. "Last season, we didn't achieve that at times, but this season, especially since our trip to the USA and the match against United, we have started to regain the qualities that have defined our team for many years."
Reflecting on the equalizer conceded against Arsenal, Guardiola acknowledged, "I could not care less about the fact that we could do better. Yes, we could have made better decisions, and we will strive to improve."
Midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at West Ham and Ipswich, is unlikely to feature against Huddersfield as Guardiola mentioned he is in London "to become a father for a second time."
Guardiola faced scrutiny over his tactics on Sunday after opting for a 5-5-0 formation in an effort to secure victory, while City's 33% possession marked the lowest he has recorded in 601 top-flight matches as a manager.
"I’m really proud and satisfied," he expressed. "We have recovered many aspects that we missed last season. We displayed an incredible spirit. Naturally, we cannot sustain that level of play throughout the season, nor do we want to, but it does give significant power to our opponents. Arsenal, for most of their matches, can dominate other teams, and I aspire to learn how to celebrate a draw against a formidable opponent like Arsenal, who are serious contenders and reached the Champions League semi-finals. I want to celebrate that point."
