Haji Wright's Late Equalizer Secures Draw for Coventry Against Norwich
Haji Wright scored a late equalizer for Coventry City, salvaging a draw in a dominant yet frustrating Championship match against Norwich City.
The Canaries appeared set for an unlikely victory thanks to Mathias Kvistgaarden's first goal for the club.
Despite sustained pressure from the Sky Blues, with Ephron Mason-Clark, Victor Torp, Wright, Jack Rudoni, and Brandon Thomas-Asante all missing key opportunities, Norwich held onto their lead for much of the match.
However, in the sixth minute of nine added minutes, USA international Wright found the back of the net, tapping in after Vladan Kovacevic had saved a shot from Ellis Simms, ensuring Coventry's unbeaten start to the Championship remains intact.
While Coventry will be relieved to have secured a point, they likely feel they should have claimed all three, given their overall dominance in the match.
Frank Lampard's side began strongly, nearly taking an early lead when Mason-Clark's diving header struck the post.
Despite their control, Coventry fell behind against the run of play in the 17th minute when Jakov Medic delivered a precise pass to Kvistgaarden at the edge of the area. The Danish forward expertly shifted the ball to his left before finishing low into the bottom corner, leaving Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth with no chance.
Following the goal, the Sky Blues applied relentless pressure, but it wasn't until their 18th attempt that they truly tested Kovacevic, with Mason-Clark forcing a solid save from the Norwich keeper with a shot from the left side of the box.
Wright squandered another significant chance, chipping over the bar from close range, while Rudoni headed wide and then shot off target as Coventry continued to press forward.
Substitute Thomas-Asante's goal-bound attempt was met with a brilliant save from Kovacevic, and Simms missed two quick-fire chances shortly thereafter.
Finally, with just three minutes remaining in added time, Coventry's pressure paid off. Milan van Ewijk executed a superb slide tackle to regain possession for Simms, whose shot deflected off the advancing Norwich keeper directly to an unmarked Wright, who made no mistake from point-blank range.
Frank Lampard will be eager for improved accuracy from his attack; his team managed only four shots on target out of 28 attempts, scoring once despite an Expected Goals (xG) tally of 4.02, while Norwich capitalized on their sole shot on target.
