Harry Kane's Stellar Season and Ballon d'Or Aspirations
Earlier this year, Harry Kane finally ended his trophy drought in his 15th season as a professional footballer when Bayern Munich were crowned Bundesliga champions.
This achievement has set the stage for him to pursue additional major titles for his club, country, and personal accolades.
Despite being in exceptional form, the England striker was ranked only 13th at the 2025 Ballon d'Or awards in September and has never finished higher than 10th in this prestigious ranking.
Since Ousmane Dembélé of Paris St-Germain was named the world's best player in Paris last month, Kane appears to have elevated his performance to an even higher, previously unimaginable level.
The 32-year-old has already reached 20 goals in just 12 club matches across all competitions, contributing to Bayern Munich's 4-0 victory over Club Brugge in the Champions League.
Kane understands that maintaining his scoring streak, winning Europe’s top club competition, and helping England succeed in the upcoming World Cup next summer will position him as a frontrunner for the 2026 Ballon d'Or.
"I would love to win it for sure; it would be a culmination of achieving something great both individually and as a team," Kane remarked earlier this month. "It would be almost the perfect season."
The last English player to win the coveted Ballon d'Or was striker Michael Owen in 2001, during his time at Liverpool. Other English winners include Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), and Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979).
Could Kane become the fifth player to gain recognition for his remarkable scoring feats, or will the new generation of talent in European football overshadow him?
Numbers Speak for Themselves
Given his impressive start to the season with Bayern Munich, this may be Kane's best opportunity yet.
In September, he became the fastest player this century to reach 100 goals for a club in one of Europe's top five leagues, achieving this milestone in just 104 matches. He has since scored 105 goals in 108 appearances.
No other player in Europe's top five leagues has matched his goal tally since the beginning of the 2023-24 season.
Neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo reached 20 goals in a season as quickly as Kane; they needed 17 and 13 games, respectively. Kane is currently averaging a goal every 54 minutes.
Having already netted 12 times in seven Bundesliga matches this term, he is on track to score 58 goals this season.
Kane requires another 30 goals in the remaining 27 games to surpass Robert Lewandowski's record of 41 goals in a single Bundesliga season.
In the Champions League, since his debut for Bayern in September 2023, he has scored 24 goals and has been directly involved in 30 goals (24 goals and 6 assists), more than any other player in the competition.
Only Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy has scored more goals in his first 60 Champions League games (48).
Kane Has Reinvented the Centre-Forward Role
However, Kane's case for the Ballon d'Or extends beyond just goals; his contributions on and off the ball, particularly when dropping back from the forward line, are unmatched by other elite strikers.
"Kane has reinvented the centre-forward role, much like Manuel Neuer transformed goalkeeping over a decade ago," wrote Lothar Matthaus, the 1990 Ballon d'Or winner, in his column for Sky Germany. "I don't see a better striker in the world right now—not just for his goals, but for his versatility and the positions he occupies on the pitch."
Kane also showcases his abilities as a passer, dribbler, and defender. He functions simultaneously as a goalscorer, playmaker, and box-to-box player.
His teammates recognize the impact he has on the field. "Harry makes you better—he's not just there to finish; he will set you up for a goal," said his former Bayern teammate Kingsley Coman on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast earlier this year. "He enjoys delivering a perfect pass as much as scoring. It's remarkable that he can excel at both roles. He is one of the easiest strikers to play with."
After Jamal Musiala's leg and ankle injury sidelined Bayern's main creative force, manager Vincent Kompany adjusted Kane's role, allowing him near-total attacking freedom on the pitch.
"He plays like three or four different players at once, which makes him invaluable," said Raphael Honigstein on the BBC Football Daily Euro Leagues podcast. Mina Rzouki added, "His footballing intelligence and commitment to the team are on another level."
Haaland and Mbappé Keeping Pace
Kane is not the only top striker vying for the title of the best player in the world. Erling Haaland has scored 24 goals in 14 matches for Manchester City and Norway this season, while Kylian Mbappé has netted 18 times in 14 appearances for Real Madrid and France. Including his recent goals for England, Kane has scored 23 in 15 matches.
While Haaland has scored in 12 consecutive matches and Mbappé's streak ended at 11, Matthaus believes neither contributes across the pitch quite like Kane.
"I've never seen Haaland or Mbappé track back in their own penalty area like Kane did in the 88th minute against Dortmund," he noted after Kane's all-action performance in Bayern's recent 2-1 win in Der Klassiker. "I also don’t see them making 50-meter passes like Kane does or executing the chip shots he can deliver."
In instances where Messi and Ronaldo have not claimed the Ballon d'Or, the winner has typically emerged from a team that has achieved success in the Champions League, Euros, or World Cup.
"It is a team trophy awarded to the best individual from that team," Kane acknowledged. "But if I continue performing at this level and we have a successful season with both club and country, there is a chance to achieve that."
Bayern Munich has secured three wins out of three in this season's Champions League, and England has qualified for the 2026 World Cup with six consecutive group victories, raising hopes that this could be the season Kane finally celebrates that "perfect season."
