Hugo Ekitike's Suspension Overshadows Liverpool's Victory
On a night when Liverpool celebrated the arrival of their record signing, Alexander Isak, a moment of recklessness has cost another in-form forward, Hugo Ekitike.
Ekitike scored the decisive goal in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Southampton, propelling Liverpool into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
However, during his celebration following the 85th-minute goal, Ekitike removed his shirt and held it up to the Liverpool fans. While he likely anticipated receiving a booking for this act, he seemed to have overlooked the fact that he had already received a yellow card earlier in the match.
This second yellow card resulted in his sending-off, leading to a suspension for Saturday's Premier League clash against Crystal Palace—a challenging situation considering he is competing for a starting position with a teammate returning to full fitness.
In a statement on social media shortly after the match, Ekitike expressed his regret, stating, "I was so excited to help the team achieve another victory here in our home for my first Carabao Cup match. The emotion got the better of me. My apologies to all the Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for this victory!"
Post-match, manager Arne Slot expressed his confusion over the incident. "It is not just foolish because it was his second yellow; it's foolish even if you haven't had a yellow card yet," he remarked. "Maybe I’m a bit old-fashioned, but if I scored a goal like he did tonight, I would acknowledge my teammates' contributions rather than making it all about myself. It was not a smart move, and now he is suspended for Saturday, which is far from ideal."
How Costly Could It Be for Ekitike?
Liverpool acquired Ekitike for £69 million from Eintracht Frankfurt in July, and he has made an impressive start to the season. Leading the line while the club secured Isak's transfer and gradually worked him up to full fitness, Ekitike has netted three goals in five Premier League appearances and provided one assist.
His contributions have been pivotal in Liverpool's winning streak since their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace on August 10, underscoring his significance to the team despite his unnecessary dismissal on Tuesday.
Both yellow cards he received were avoidable; after replacing Isak at halftime, he was booked shortly after for throwing the ball in frustration after a foul was called against him.
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton commented on BBC Radio 5 Live, "For Ekitike to receive a second yellow card for that celebration is sheer stupidity. He has been a crucial player for Liverpool this season, and missing the upcoming game is not ideal for Arne Slot."
Ultimately, Ekitike is likely to view this incident as a valuable learning experience. "I’d be very surprised if he does it again," Slot added. "He probably forgot he had received a yellow card. He is young and will learn from this mistake."
Is Isak Ready to Start Against Palace?
Isak's playing time has been managed carefully since his arrival at Liverpool. He has made two starts in cup competitions, playing 58 minutes against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on September 17, and appearing in the first half against Southampton.
In the Premier League, he has only featured once, coming off the bench in the 67th minute during the 2-1 victory against Everton last weekend. His substitution at halftime in the match against Southampton likely indicates that Slot was already considering giving him more playing time against Crystal Palace.
In addition to scoring against Southampton, Isak had an earlier opportunity but shot directly at goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
"I feel good," Isak told ITV. "Every game I play helps me get into better shape." When asked if he feels ready to start, he replied, "It’s difficult to say. It’s a mix of fitness and football. I feel good and believe I am in shape to make a difference."
