Hull City Triumphs Over Wrexham, Ending Unbeaten Streak
Hull City secured a spot in the Championship play-off positions with a decisive victory that halted Wrexham's impressive nine-game unbeaten run in the league.
Kyle Joseph and Oli McBurnie scored for the Tigers, while Kieffer Moore missed a penalty, contributing to a comfortable win at the MKM Stadium. Hull now sits in sixth place, ahead of seventh-placed Queens Park Rangers on goal difference.
The defeat marked only Wrexham's second loss in 15 league matches, causing them to drop to 14th place, four points away from the top six.
Hull started strong, taking the lead in the 10th minute when Joseph capitalized on a rebound after Arthur Okonkwo saved Matt Crooks' initial shot. Wrexham had a chance to equalize just six minutes later, but Moore dragged his shot wide from close range after a fortunate deflection.
Undeterred, Hull continued to press for a second goal as Darko Gyabi missed a chance by turning Crooks' cross over the bar, and Okonkwo later denied Regan Slater's low strike.
Phil Parkinson, watching from the stands due to a one-match ban, knew the importance of his half-time talk after a lackluster first half from his side. Wrexham showed signs of improvement after the break, with Nathan Broadhead's deflected shot going over the bar.
Wrexham was awarded a penalty ten minutes into the second half when Crooks fouled Broadhead in the box. However, Ivor Pandur saved Moore's penalty, continuing a frustrating evening for the Welsh striker.
Hull appealed for a penalty of their own when Dom Hyam appeared to handle the ball in his own area, but the appeal was denied. Midway through the second half, McBurnie, who had just come off the bench, doubled Hull's lead by guiding Ryan Giles' cross past Okonkwo.
Liam Millar struck the crossbar later on, and Okonkwo denied David Akintola, but Hull's victory was already assured, responding impressively after their recent 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.
No Gelhardt, No Problem as Moore Struggles
Only Adam Armstrong of Southampton has scored more Championship goals than Joe Gelhardt this season, so Hull fans were understandably concerned about his absence due to a calf injury. However, Joseph quickly eased those worries by giving the Tigers an early lead.
McBurnie, returning from nearly two months out with injury, scored just 241 seconds after entering the field, with Giles providing his eighth league assist of the season, the highest in the division.
While Hull's attackers thrived, Wrexham's Moore had a difficult night. Hull, who had not kept a clean sheet in their past six league games and had faced the most shots in the Championship this season, saw Wrexham fail to capitalize in the first half, registering no shots on target, with Moore missing a clear opportunity.
The Wales striker, who has scored 10 goals this season all from open play, had another chance to score from the penalty spot in the second half but was thwarted by Pandur's save. It was an unusual off night for both Moore and Wrexham, and their upcoming home match against Watford will be crucial as they seek to bounce back from their first league defeat since October 18.
