Ibane Bowat's Header Secures Victory for Portsmouth Against Blackburn
Ibane Bowat's first goal for Portsmouth helped his team come from behind to defeat Blackburn Rovers, ending a three-match losing streak.
The defender scored with a header from a corner taken by Conor Chaplin, which Blackburn had carelessly conceded. The defeat leaves the Lancashire side just three points above the relegation zone.
Blackburn initially took the lead with a solo goal from Japan international Yuki Ohashi in the first half, as they aimed to improve their away record, which was only surpassed by the top two teams, Coventry and Middlesbrough.
However, Portsmouth rallied in the second half, pushing hard for an equalizer that finally came from Callum Lang. Bowat then secured the victory, lifting the south coast club out of the bottom three.
Both teams entered the match at Fratton Park desperately seeking three points, with Portsmouth having won only once in their last ten matches and Blackburn drawing three in a row, leaving them hovering just above the relegation zone.
Blackburn welcomed back captain Todd Cantwell for his first start in two months following injury, but both teams struggled to create opportunities in a lackluster first half. Terry Devlin's long-range effort was the only shot of note in the opening thirty minutes.
Ohashi broke the deadlock by leading a counter-attack from a pass by Sidnei Tavares. With too much space given by Andre Dozzell and Devlin, he maneuvered between the two defenders and placed his shot into the far corner, marking his fifth goal of the season.
In the second half, Portsmouth intensified their pressure, with last-ditch defending from Blackburn preventing them from equalizing. Rovers' goalkeeper Aynsley Pears made two crucial saves from Chaplin's attempts, while a shot from Lang was cleared off the line by Yuri Ribeiro in a remarkable sequence of play.
The mounting pressure paid off when Lang connected with Josh Murphy's superb whipped cross, finishing on the half-volley at the far post.
As Blackburn struggled to cope, Portsmouth finished the match strongly. Despite having had issues with set-pieces this season, they ultimately won the game through that very method, as Bowat rose highest to head home Chaplin's corner, igniting jubilant celebrations among the Pompey supporters.
