Inter Milan Secures Dominant 4-0 Victory Over Union Saint-Gilloise
Inter Milan maintained their flawless start to the Champions League season with a decisive 4-0 victory against Union Saint-Gilloise.
Determined to move past last season's final, where they suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris St-Germain, Inter showcased their strength with four different players finding the net. They have now won their first three matches without conceding a single goal.
Denzel Dumfries opened the scoring in the 41st minute, capitalizing on a scramble in the Union box to strike from close range.
Inter doubled their lead just before halftime when Lautaro Martinez completed a swift counter-attack, beating goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen to net his third Champions League goal of the season.
Hakan Calhanoglu extended the lead with a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review revealed that Kevin Mac Allister, brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis, had handled a header from Martinez.
Francesco Pio Esposito redeemed himself after missing an open goal by tapping in a cut-back from Ange-Yoan Bonny.
Union Saint-Gilloise had a promising start, forcing a goalline clearance from Martinez, while goalkeeper Yann Sommer was called into action to thwart attempts from Promise David and Mathias Rasmussen in the early stages.
However, Inter was clinical with their chances, and Cristian Chivu's side now sits second in the 36-team league phase, tied on points with last season's champions, PSG, and Arsenal.
Inter will host Kazakh club Kairat Almaty at the San Siro for their next Champions League match on November 5, while Union will travel to Atletico Madrid on November 4.
