Ipswich Town Secures Victory Over Portsmouth
First-half goals from Jaden Philogene and George Hirst propelled Ipswich Town to a victory against Portsmouth at Portman Road.
Philogene opened the scoring with a curling shot early in the match, followed by a tap-in from Hirst against his former team, which doubled the hosts' lead just before halftime.
In between these goals, Portsmouth had a significant opportunity when Alex Palmer thwarted on-loan Tottenham winger Yang Min-Hyeok in a one-on-one situation.
Late in the game, Ivan Azon struck the post as Ipswich sought a third goal, but Marlon Pack managed to pull one back for Portsmouth during stoppage time.
Jacob Greaves was absent for Ipswich due to suspension following a red card received in the abandoned match against Blackburn. His suspension remains in effect, despite the English Football League's decision to replay that match after it was halted in the 79th minute with Blackburn leading 1-0 against Ipswich, who were down to ten men.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho made significant changes to his lineup, implementing five alterations for the trip to Portman Road.
The revamped Portsmouth side quickly fell behind as Philogene cut inside and curled a shot into the bottom corner, marking his fourth goal in two games.
Prior to the abandonment of the Blackburn match, Philogene had scored a hat-trick in Ipswich's 5-0 victory over Sheffield United.
Portsmouth's new goalkeeper, Josef Bursik, made a crucial save against Sammie Szmodics, while Palmer denied a header from Zak Swanson and again stopped Yang as Portsmouth attempted to respond in the first half.
Ipswich extended their lead just before the halftime whistle when Hirst connected with Leif Davis to tap in a goal in the 41st minute.
In the second half, Sindre Walle Egeli had a shot deflected onto the roof of the net, and Philogene narrowly missed with a shot off-target. Bursik later tipped a header from Dara O'Shea over the bar, and Azon struck the outside of the post before Pack scored a late consolation goal for Portsmouth.
