Ivory Coast Advances to Quarter-Finals of Africa Cup of Nations
Amad Diallo shone as defending champions Ivory Coast secured a convincing victory over Burkina Faso, advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco.
The Manchester United winger opened the scoring in the 20th minute, skillfully maneuvering past several defenders before executing a delicate finish that beat goalkeeper Herve Koffi from close range.
Twelve minutes later, Diallo played a crucial role in the second goal, setting up Yan Diomande, who curled a shot past the wrong-footed Koffi from just inside the penalty area.
Burkina Faso's Dango Ouattara nearly reduced the deficit before halftime, but his right-footed attempt from a tight angle struck the base of the left post and was collected by Ivorian keeper Yahia Fofana.
Fofana later made a remarkable save with his right foot to deny Ouattara shortly after the hour mark, while Diallo was also thwarted in his attempt to score a second goal by another excellent stop from Koffi.
In the closing stages, teenager Bazoumana Toure sealed the victory with a spectacular solo goal, charging forward from deep within his own half and finishing clinically past Koffi into the left corner of the net.
Emerse Fae's team will now face the record seven-time champions Egypt, who triumphed over Benin 3-1 after extra time on Monday, in a highly anticipated quarter-final match in Agadir on Saturday at 19:00 GMT.
Ivorian Attack Proving Potent
Late drama and comebacks characterized Ivory Coast's journey to their third Afcon title on home soil during the 2023 edition, where they topped their group in Morocco with a stoppage-time goal securing a 3-2 comeback win against Gabon.
However, the Elephants began their campaign in Marrakesh with determination. Amad had already sent a free-kick wide and produced another attempt across the goal before he broke the deadlock by capitalizing on a loose ball just inside the box on the right.
Diomande's finish highlighted their dominance, as he had another shot blocked and right-back Guela Doue headed a corner wide at the near post before halftime, with the Ivorians eager to extend their lead.
Stallions coach Brama Traore made several substitutions to reinvigorate his side, including introducing captain Bertrand Traore, but Ouattara's low shot was the closest Burkina Faso came to scoring.
Amad had a chance to make it 3-0 with just 14 minutes remaining, but Koffi produced a stunning save, deflecting the ball from near ground level onto the crossbar.
Toure, who played a pivotal role in the comeback against Gabon, came off the bench to score once again, a moment celebrated enthusiastically by coach Fae on the sidelines.
The Ivorians, showcasing a wealth of attacking talent even in the absence of Simon Adingra and Sebastien Haller, became the first defending champions to reach the quarter-finals since Egypt in 2010.
Egypt, the last team to retain the trophy with a hat-trick of titles 16 years ago, will aim to end the Elephants' reign when they meet in a thrilling match on Saturday.
