Jack Wilshere Appointed Manager of Luton Town
Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere is set to be announced as the new manager of League One side Luton Town.
The 33-year-old will take over from Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed earlier this month after less than a year in charge at Kenilworth Road.
This appointment marks Wilshere's first full-time managerial role, as he steps in to lead a Luton team currently positioned 11th in the third tier following back-to-back relegations.
Wilshere emerged victorious in the selection process, outperforming Leyton Orient's Richie Wellens for the role.
Additionally, Chris Powell will join Luton as Wilshere's assistant. Powell, a former England left-back, recently served as interim first-team coach at Walsall for two weeks while covering for Gary Waddock during his recovery from ankle surgery.
After retiring as a player in 2022, Wilshere briefly managed Arsenal's under-18 team and spent much of the previous season as a first-team coach at Championship club Norwich City.
He was appointed interim head coach for Norwich's final two league matches following the departure of Johannes Hoff Thorup, before leaving Carrow Road at the end of the season.
Luton Town achieved promotion to the Premier League under Rob Edwards in 2023, but they spent only one season in the top flight before suffering a second consecutive relegation last season.
Bloomfield was appointed after Edwards' departure in January but was unable to maintain the club's Championship status, winning only 12 of his 33 matches in charge.
Wilshere's first match as Luton manager will be a home fixture against Mansfield Town this Saturday.
Wilshere made his professional debut for Arsenal at the age of 16 in 2008 and won the FA Cup twice with the Gunners, making nearly 200 appearances before transferring to West Ham United in 2018.
He also had stints with Bournemouth and Danish club Aarhus before retiring at the age of 30. On the international stage, Wilshere earned 34 caps for England, participating in the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.
